A crescent moon was hanging bright in the center of the murky sky, casting a ghostly glow around the pale body of a moving figure below. The young lion glided across the roofs on silent, graceful paws, his blue eyes shining brilliantly against the darkness. Not wanting to interrupt any of the guards on duty below, Alex had chosen the higher part of the city on which to take his midnight stroll. He had done this plenty of times before, and by now had almost completely memorized the pattern of the rooftops to the point where he could walk the entire way around them with his eyes closed. He knew where every crack in the shingles was, every space between buildings that required him to make a short leap to the other side.
There were many nights where he would do this instead of sleep. Sometimes his head was filled with too many thoughts that it made sleeping impossible. Other times he would be woken up by nightmares of when he’d been kidnapped by those dogs. Tonight he simply wasn’t in the mood for rest yet and felt some fresh air might help calm him down a little. Nebula sometimes joined him on these walks, but she had fallen asleep early after a long day of hunting, leaving Alex on his own for the night.
He eventually reached the last of the buildings, and with nowhere else to walk he sat down and took a breather. A warm breeze whisked through his short mane and he pulled his head back to look upwards at the open sky, parting his lips to inhale a puff of the crisp summer air. With the humans dead for over five years now, the effects of their pollution were starting to heal and stars could easily be seen again, sprinkled across the dark blue canvas like glitter.
Lowering his gaze, Alex casually turned to look along the length of the rooftops behind him, sensing the presence of someone coming up behind him. He had been about to leap off the building and head back to his room in the slaughterhouse for the night, thinking perhaps sleep would come more easily now that he had released all the pent up energy from his body, but the stranger’s presence compelled him to stay. He didn’t know if they had been following him, or just happened to be walking in the same direction. Either way, he waited quietly for them to show their face and say something.

Ember walks. Ember talks. Ember's thoughts.
The elegant lioness stopped as she noticed a similar figure on another one of the buildings. She looked exactly like her mother. Except for the coat color and lack of scars, anyone could mistake her for Icefang, one of the most feared felines in Iris, now that Florence had passed away. She was known for her aggressive attitude and lack of mercy on any of her victims. Once she had you on her sights, you were lucky to escape with her life, even luckier without any harm.
But Ember was not her mother. She had inherited the calm side from her father, Streiter. She had lived long enough in Lexis to not have a strong fear of canines or hatred for them. Though now that she lived in Iris Pride for the remainder of her year and a half here, she had started to at least be wary around canines. Ember wouldn't attack them on sight but wasn't exactly going to start a conversation either.
The female leaped onto the same building as the ivory male. The way the moon's light reflected off his pelt gave him a glow. There was something about him that drew her attention to him. "Hello." She greeted. "I'm Ember. Daughter of Icefang and Streither. Excuse me for not knowing your name...you are?" It might be a shock for some to know of her bloodline. But the lioness was older now, before she had to be protected by her mother from all the attacks and taunting she had endured as a cub.
Her mother had done well. In the moonlight, Ember looked graceful. She was one of the few felines in Iris who didn't bore any scars on her pelt. Though the female still hadn't been in her first fight. Her brown eyes skimmed the male once more. What was it about him that drew her to him? Perhaps it was his coat? Though she had met Nebula, and hadn't been as fascinated. There was an air of...importance that engulfed this individual. Maybe that was it. His confidence.

Not only that, but a lion who was close to him in age, and not one of his siblings. Very curious, he stepped forward to get a closer look, his claws hooking into the shingles of the rooftop to balance himself, then sat down in front of her as she introduced herself. Her scent was Iris, of course, and yet there was something…different about it compared to the other cats in the pride. He couldn't place what it was, until she mentioned the name of her father.
Streiter? Alex didn’t know much about the rest of the city, but he recognized the name of the old Lexis Tribe leader and his half-siblings’ father. Yet that was as far as he knew. His father refused to talk to him about it, and he hadn’t gone out to seek the truth from any of the other pridemembers, so the entire story of how those other lions, his strange half-siblings, had been born was still a mystery to him. He didn’t know how his fierce mother could have fallen in love with someone from those stupid, dog-loving Lexis people. Since his father had put that topic under the ‘you’re too young to understand’ category and would not disclose any more details, Alex was left in the dark. He wondered if Nebula knew yet. If she didn’t, it was something he’d just have to ask Sota about the next time he saw her.
So that meant this Ember girl was part Lexis. Alex’s face softened a bit; he could imagine she must have been put through a lot of hell from the older felines as a young cub. Well, in his opinion, as long as she was loyal to Iris, it didn’t really matter who her father happened to be. Alex didn’t like being compared to his mother, either – she had been a tyrant, and her cruelty to her own pride had caused Iris to fall into shambles. He didn’t want to be that kind of leader. Dogs were the ones to be treated like scum, not your fellow pridemembers.
He wondered if the fact that she was Streiter’s cub had been the reason no one had introduced him to her earlier. Before he could ponder that question any further, he realized she was still waiting for an answer from him. “I’m Alexander, firstborn son of Florence and Panja, heir to the Iris Pride throne," he boasted, tossing his mane and smiling in a playfully arrogant way. Normally he didn’t like to flaunt his status, since he had quickly learned it caused others to become annoyed with him rather than to respect him, but he couldn’t resist showing off a little this time, just for fun.
“Nice to meet you. And don’t worry – I couldn’t care less about the whole Lexis Tribe thing. It’s stupid how so many of the adults think your bloodline somehow makes you stronger or weaker.” He shook his head in disdain and thought about how similar the situation was to his own. People expected him to be a mighty, cunning warrior just because he was the son of the leaders, when really, he didn’t know the first thing about fighting yet.
Alex briefly glanced her over before turning his thoughtful gaze out towards the moonlit alleys. Maybe it was time he got to know some of the other cats around here. He realized that, besides the Duchess, Sota, his siblings and Panja, he knew nothing about the members of the pride he was going to lead one day. Bringing his attention back to the young lioness, he figured maybe she’d be a good place to start. His frosty blue eyes met her warm brown ones as he asked her casually, “So anyway, Ember, what’re you doing up here this time of night? Couldn’t sleep either?”

Ember walks. Ember talks. Ember's thoughts.
As he sat in front of her, she scanned him over once more. His eyes were a wonderful blue. She knew that with one look, they could absorb all of her attention. There was something about this male. Ember knew this wouldn't end up being a one time encounter. She planned to see him more. At the arrogance that entered his tone, she stifle a giggle. "That's cool. Must be nice, to be treated well, huh?" Despite the hell she endured as a child, the lioness never really held onto grudges. Her mother protecting her had only made her deal with harsh remarks.
"Mmm. I guess." She replied as she glanced at the moon. "I guess I like to come up here and...think about my life. I want to see my brother. I hardly remember him...but I miss him." Her voice grew soft as she sighed. Would she get to ever see him? How could she find him? Her mother never told her about him. But, she had heard the rumors within the Pride. Then, she had heard about the death of her father. He had been murdered by Florence's first litter.
"How's Nebula? She's your sister, right? I met her when I was younger and first came to the Pride. She had caught a deer and I remembered how surprised I was at the size. She had been the first feline to be friendly towards me here." The young female gave a small smile. She hadn't seen her for a while. Ember hoped she was doing well.
Her body slumped down onto the top of the roof. Stretching out on her side, belly exposed towards the male, she sighed softly. She felt relaxed and at peace. The female wasn't vulnerable. Her mother had taught her to always be alert.
