The decrepit highway was a blistering nightmare. The cracked pavement stretched on forever, even beyond the rippling horizon for all the foxhound mix knew. She had never traveled all the way before, but from what she heard, the only way out of this miserably forsaken city was the mountains. Still, I should try it sometime, Alexa noted, a crooked smirk spreading across her muzzle. There was nothing like busting out, but on the other hand, there was still a lot of Hexasol the canine hadn't explored...even though she knew the town like the back of her paw.
Sighing, she finally recognized the turn-off from the highway she needed. Tongue dangling from the side of her maw, she pushed herself into a steady yet fatigued lope up the ramp. The highway sign, with all of it's unfamiliar human symbols, was slightly rusted, while the one next to it was hanging from several measly screws, bound to fall off in a few more years. With no humans to maintain the city, especially after the flood, nature was reclaiming it's former terrain. The streets were cracked like shattered glass with weeds and other stubborn vegetation poking up and separating the rock through the cracks. Nevertheless, several sites had retained some of their previous vigor- like the place Alexa was destined to explore today, the abandoned schoolhouse.
Alexa had given the building a passing glance once or twice, perhaps even a brief peek through a broken window- but nothing more. Compared to the other structures on the strip, it was in decent condition. The fact more windows than not were intact and the brick walls were still holding strong was quite a feat. The inside though, as Alexa would soon find out, wasn't quite as pretty. Paint had chipped off in all kinds of places and most of the carpeting was moldy and destroyed. Alexa, however, wasn't in the least bit picky. The dirtier the better, as her father would say. Her copper irises lit up in anticipation when she finally turned the corner, where a dingy two-story construction rose up from the earth, the remains of a flag still hanging feebly from a pole nearby.
Licking her lips, she sprinted across the street and to the front doors, carefully inhaling up all of the old scents in the area while also checking for the new. The doors were closed, so Alexa hopped over the railing and found a broken window instead. The plan was to explore a bit and see if she could get on the roof. If she could, it would be a pretty neat place to stay the night, especially since the sky was completely devoid of clouds. With any luck, the clouds would stay away and it would be a perfect night for star-gazing, a nostalgic past-time of the lab mix.
Inside the building it felt like the temperature had dropped at least twenty degrees. But saying that, anything felt good after that scorching heat. It took a few moments for Lex's eyes to adjust, and a voice from the back of her mind reminded her that it was not very smart to jump through doorways not knowing what was on the opposite side, but as she usually did, she ignored the thought. She had made it into the main office area. Benches were lined along the walls and she found herself surrounded by doorways and hallways. The first thing she noticed, however, was the strong musty odor of the place. It had a dank kind of feel that she didn't like, so she proceeded down the hallway. The rooms never seemed to end, and each one wasn't very distinctive from the other.
Alexa was ready to lose her mind when finally, she reached a dimly lit staircase. Without hesitating she bounded up the steps, shivering as the sun caressed her back as she passed a window. It really was cooler in here. And endless. Cursing under her breath, she stopped in her tracks. Was there any way to access the roof from inside? That's when she saw the window at the end of the hall, with a roof sticking out beneath it slanting upwards.
"Ka-ching," Alexa muttered, smiling as she reached the dirty panes. A small, jagged hole was smashed through on the bottom, barely big enough for Alexa to squeeze through. As conscientious as she tried to be, Alexa resulted with a slit shoulder, but the wound ceased bleeding after a couple of minutes. She then proceeded up the slanted tin, mindful not to slip on the slippery surface. When she reached the edge, she could see right over where she had entered. She grinned mischievously. This was the perfect spot for foolery. No one would expect a dog to get up on the roof anyway, let alone mock other animals from above. Tired from the day's travels, Alexa lowered herself to the ground with her paws dangling from the edge, waiting for the next passerby to either tease or surprise. The afternoon was slowly dying off, with the sun steadily creeping to the horizon. The fun had just begun.
