For a moment, all seemed to be going well. Surprisingly well. Of course, that was about three seconds after Laptop had ran down the hall at the Great Dane and leapt at him and about one second before he realized with a panicking squeak that another dog had gotten between him and his originally intended target. He hadn't even had a moment to try to twist his dark brown body to change direction before the husky let out a snort of something between the lines of amusement and disgust and raised a paw to swat unrelentingly at his head.
The little brown cat smacked into the ground with a yelp. Ow! Why on Earth did you go and attack that stupid dog, anyways? "Because you told me to," Laptop whimpered in response. Well, get up before that bitch crushes your skull into kitty-cat dust and sprinkles it as seasoning on her dinner! Though Laptop wanted to argue, he knew it was best just to scramble back before another blow could be made. As the admittedly dazed cat back-peddled over the floor like a bat out of hell, he managed to glance up and spot a figure striding across the floor - Fletcher, a crippled lion, also Florence's brother.
Laptop felt a bit of his inferiority beginning to slink towards the surface, but inside his head, he screamed, Knock it off, you whiny little fluffball! "Quit yelling at me," he responded in a whine. "You're making a frightening situation even worse." Oh, you're such a pussy. "Shut up." Get fighting, you baby! Fletcher's here now; don't embarrass yourself in front of him! Laptop nodded in response. If only there was a smaller dog to go after... Fletcher taunted and warned his enemies, and they did the same. The only opponent Laptop could picture facing was a poodle. What it lacked in being intimidating, it made up for in, well... being intimidating.
Over all, none of these were fights that Laptop figured he could win, but he'd sure try. Get a move on, Laptop! The dark brown Burmese nodded and ran off over the floor, trying to ignore the avalanche of sparkles flaring out in his wake while simultaneously trying to be aware of all of the canines and enemies around him. He didn't want to get caught off guard again. With that, Laptop made a leap for the poodle, trying to leap for her paws and knock her down instead of trying to cling to her back as he would've done with the Great Dane. With any luck, no one would be in his way this time, and perhaps he could distract the poodle long enough to get to the real threat of the creatures stealing their scum!

She didn’t fancy getting wet, especially since it was already almost completely dark. She shivered. What if something happened to their parents, if they didn’t survive this thing they called war? They had said that they’d be fine, and she believed them; after all, what canine was bigger than a lion. They would come back. How could they not, with their children waiting here for them? Reassured by her own thoughts, the cub switched her tail, still aching with curiosity about the dogs. She knew that they were dangerous savages; that they were far below felines in intelligence. Their appearance had been described to her and her siblings a few times, but she wanted to see one for herself. This was the perfect chance, in her mind. So why not go now?
Turning back to face Alex and Orbit, the white lion cub pleaded, “Come on, Alex, just one peek? There are cats here to protect us from the canines, and I swear I’ll die of curiosity if we don’t. I’ll protect you if you’re scared.” An amused smile punctuated her words, but as she spoke them, she felt a faint tremor that had nothing to do with cold run through her small body. She sat down on the tiles, and watched as Denim lowered his head to the roof to listen. A moment later, she heard the sound of raised voices, some familiar, some sounding very different in timbre and clarity to what she was used to. They must be the dogs, she thought, and a vivid picture entered her mind, of a savage creature made of darkness eating her siblings one by one, smiling wickedly as they did so. She shuddered visibly. They had been told repeatedly to be wary of canines. If you don’t eat your dinner, a dog will come and eat it for you. And then have you for dessert. If you don’t stop fighting, the dog will come and stop it for you. If you put one paw outside Iris territory unless you are with an adult , a dog will rip you to shreds.
Yes, there was no doubt about it, dogs were evil and very dangerous. But still, she wanted to know what they were really like, and no amount of fear, or so she thought, could eradicate her interest in them. Come on, you’ll be an extremely visible target if you go down there, the sensible side of her warned her. You’re white. The night is black. It’s safe up here, at least for now. Down there is danger. Denim’s voice only added to the discouragement of her sensible inner voice. He said that they could go, but he would stay here. “Aw, come on, Denny. It’s just a quick look. Besides, I don’t want to leave you alone. That would be mean. Any of us being left alone would be mean.” Even though they were annoying and frustrated her at times, like now, she truly loved her brothers and deep down, she knew she didn’t want to be nasty to them or for them to be hurt. But why, why was it only Orbit who was as curious as her? Unless they could persuade both Alex and Denim, they’d all be stuck up here until something happened.

Jade stood, snarling as the lion approached, and only looked aside to glance out of the corner of her eye as K9 came up beside her. "If we all come from the front, we'll be swatted down like flies. Whoever hear is swiftest will need to slip around to his flank, it's our only chance. The hallway greatly diminishes the power of our outnumbering him." Jade bobbed her head in a sharp, slight nod. "Agreed." She whispered, her voice just barely quivered with fear of the creature practically barrelling towards them, her legs quivered as well, though not affecting her stance. Then, after a brief second, she spoke again. "I'll go, I'm good at sneaking around and pretty quick, if you can hold while I'm gone." She whispered, eyes focussing on K9 briefly.
Unfortunatly, this distraction would be very bad.
A moment later something barrelled into her legs, which had shifted position when she turned, and knocked the left front into the right front, causing her to stumble, her front end descending and hitting the floor hard, her back end slipping the same way a moment later with her momentum. A loud yelp had escaped her mouth at the moment of impact, and was silenced when her jaw hit the floor. She thrashed a moment to get her paws under her, then as she stood, looked down at the feline that had run into her, the one she'd spotted Lilith knocking aside a moment earlier. She snarled as she rose, lunging downward to try to get a grip on it with her teeth. If she could, she would toss the feline aside before taking off to follow K9's plan.

Fletcher wasn't about to give in so easily though. Ears flicking when K9 announced his plan, he had to laugh. "And you think I'll let you go into that hallway so easily? You slip passed me, expect to be chased down with your tails between your legs, if they haven't been ripped off already." With a sneer, Fletcher leapt back into action as soon as Laptop came crashing down upon the poodle. He, however, went right for the German Shepherd who thought he was smart enough to get away from him.
"Let's see your mind beat my power!" he roared, rearing up on his back legs like a horse as he approached the canine before slamming his paws down, hoping to knock him over, maybe break his spine in the process if the attack was a success. What a lovely death that would be; paralyzing the canine by snapping his vertebrae and then killing his friends in front of him before finally putting him out of his misery. Oh it would be glorious.
After his initial attack, Fletcher leapt again, aiming for the Great Dane, "And don't think I've forgotten about you either," he hissed, eyes wild with the thrill of a fight.

I just don’t get why you want to go down there when we’re perfectly fine up here.” But even as he said this, the cub was bristling with indignation at the thought that his siblings saw him as a coward. He was Alexander, he was anything but a coward. Showing his fear was showing weakness. As much as he tried to ignore it, Orbit and Nebula’s teasing was getting under his skin. His father had told him to stay here and be brave, and now they were telling him to be brave and leave. Alex couldn’t win either way.
“I’d rather get wet than get dead,” he mumbled, staring up at the sky. A fat raindrop fell from the clouds and landed between his eyes. Alex wiped his face with his paw in annoyance. “Oh, fine!” he suddenly said, standing up, “but we gotta get back before our parents do! I’m gonna be in sooo much trouble if they find out I let you guys leave.”
Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad. Just sitting on this rooftop was scarier than going for a little walk around the hospital grounds – if they kept moving, maybe the monsters wouldn’t catch them. If they stayed still here, they might eventually be sniffed out. Dogs had good noses, or so he was told. But they had bad eyes in the dark. If he and Nebula kept themselves in the shadows, hopefully their bright colored coats wouldn’t attract any unwanted attention.
And he had to admit, this was exciting stuff! It was a battle, after all, which meant they had the chance of seeing some really gory fighting. Alex thought that sort of stuff was just so cool, especially if it was a dog getting beaten up. It would be so funny to watch those gross canines getting torn to ribbons by the cats’ claws. He couldn’t wait till he grew big claws…if he wasn’t so afraid of dogs, he would go out and scratch up every single one of them.
“We can’t go far though,” he warned. “Like, just around this building and no more.” His paws slid on the slippery roof as he tried to figure out just exactly how they were going to get down without hurting themselves. Mother had placed them up here, and she was so big that she could jump down with no problem. To a little cub this height was really scary. But he was smart and tough, he’d find a way.
“And then we gotta come right back and…ugh, Denim.” Alexander rolled his eyes. Nebs was right, they couldn’t leave him behind. It was all of them, or none of them. He looked at his sister and Orbit for help, not really in the mood to convince Denim all by himself. He loved his little brother, but the other cub could be a real buzzkill.

Aside from the occasional quickly silenced yelps as the remaining Iris guards were slain on sight, the only sound was the clicking of the canines’ claws. Nothing major, but secrecy was of the essence. They hadn’t run into difficult problems yet in terms of defense. However, it was unlikely Florence would leave her precious hospital completely undefended—a couple domestics scattered here and there were hardly impenetrable. As much as he wished for some worthy opponent to appear, the mission had to come first. Their purposeful silence was abruptly shattered by a shrill yowl shortly after Quinn rammed a door open with his bulk.
"You can save that for later, we’ll have our paws full in no time with this commotion," Maestro spat impatiently at the white wolf revealed within the cell. She looked as if she could hardly stand, so why in the world was she wasting time instead of trying to hurry up and escape? They didn’t have all day. The words barely left his lips before a massive lion bounded into view, blocking the doorway, the one way out of the room. Jade hurtled in front of the tawny beast, where K9 promptly joined. Whatever plan they’d come up it, it was ruined the tiny cat from before barged straight into Jade.
"And you think I'll let you go into that hallway so easily? You slip passed me, expect to be chased down with your tails between your legs, if they haven't been ripped off already. Let's see your mind beat my power!”
A sudden wave of déjà vu seemed to crash over him. In the second that the lion reared, his mind’s eye flashed back to the zoo. Another city, another dog, another large cat, tearing the life out of a comrade. Out of the Scavengers, the german shepherd was quite possibly the only one he considered a friend…and he wasn’t about to stand by and watch him be killed. Being one of the few still out in the open corridor, his next move was perfectly clear, especially with the giant so focused on the individuals inside. ”You seem to have forgotten that not all of us are in there!” Maestro darted forward, a red-orange blur in the dim area. He sprang up, attempting to dig his claws into the upright lion’s back and at the same time clamp his jaws down on a shoulder. ooc;; i'm kinda confused as to where everyone is at the moment, in terms of the hallway and the room :/ |

Watch my moves! Read my mind! Hear my voice!
K9 glanced at Jade as she murmured her agreement to his plan, and likewise offered to take up the flank of the attack, unfortunately it looked like strategy alone was not going to win this fight. The lion had heard K9, something he'd wanted to avoid. Nonetheless, the male lion focused what seemed to be every ounce of his rage on the german shepherd. K9 had no time to realize what had happened to Jade, he simply knew she was no longer beside him. She had moved forward, then down, then all he could see was golden pelt climbing over his field of vision. Giant ivory paws, with claws like daggers gleamed skyward, looming over his head. He let out a sharp bark in reaction, as his feet instinctively braced for a quick back step.
Just seconds from having upwards of two hundred pounds of lion flesh crushing his frame, K9 heard the cry of a friend and a familiar red form come flying into the airspace of the hulking mass of feline before him. Maestro was not a moment too late. Seeing opportunity, the miracle that it was, K9 hopped to his right and dashed forward past the lion's flank. He made it just two doors down the hall, before sharply spinning his body back around to face the carnage. Jade was simply stumbling over her own feet and a small feline, thankfully it didn't look as though she were gravely injured. Although, she was down in a very poor location. That lion could easily land on her, or one clean swip would send her exposed belling spilling open. K9's mind was getting too technical. He refrained from thinking of what could happen, and put his mind on what he wanted to make happen.
Without a sound, he started back the way he had come. He ran full speed, but just before the distance between himself and the feline was closed, he ducked his head downward and began sliding along the floor. His rear began to turn his form until he was nearly sideways, but he aimed his jaws for the back leg of the lion. Hopefully taking out just one ankle would give them an edge. If the lion couldn't rear up like a stallion, it would eliminate quite a few of his most lethal attacks, K9 imagined.

With the wolf by his side, Quinn slowly walked out of the cell. Just as Rikki was about to ask him a question, a roar followed by a strong voice echoed down the hallway. Quinn faced the big lion just as it leapt toward them, its front paw mutilated from some battle years ago. But unfortunately for the Scavengers, the male lion wasn't completely crippled by his deformation and he was without doubt just as dangerous as any other lion in this damned Pride.
Rikki moved away from him, giving him the chance to fight the lion as Jade and K9 came to stand between him and the angry feline. Se shouted at the lion, making Quinn realize that she knew the big male lion all too well. A plan was quickly formed between Jade and K9, but it all went wrong as the little Burmese cat snapped at Jade's legs, making her slip in the hallway as the lion came nearer. With Jade distracted by the cat, the lion now aimed for the Shepherd, towering above the fellow Scavenger. Quinn ran to help, but he knew he was already too late when a red shaped creature jumped at the lion. It was Maestro, the lead of command on their team, who'd made sure K9 hadn't been caught by the lion's claws. K9 took the opportunity to run down the hall and back again, making his body slide on the floor to get the lion out of balance.
Quinn now saw his own chance to participate in the fight. With Rikki - almost - safely placed by the wall, he raced toward the lion who was busy with fighting Maestro. He aimed for the lion's neck with his jaws, slamming his own body into the lion's in an attempt on helping K9 with getting the lion out of balance.

Blind to everything else, Laptop had simply run full speed at the poodle. Fortunately, it seemed as though his plot to knock over the poodle had been surprisingly... well, effective. He'd slammed directly into her left leg - headfirst, of course, giving himself a rather miserable headache and a twinging pain in the neck - and caused it to slide aside, colliding into her right leg and causing her to fall forward. Unfortunately for Laptop, he hadn't exactly been in the most wondrous position when she collapsed. The weight of the canine, though thankfully not as much as it could've been, crashed down on top of him, crushing him into the floor. He let out a wheeze as his breath was squeezed out of him.
The next few moments were rather bittersweet, full of many pros and cons. On one hand, he'd successfully knocked down his opponent, giving Fletcher a chance to continue charging towards his enemies, and in a moment, the canine was scrabbling to get off of him. On the other hand, though, the one that was pretty much shit out of luck, was that other canines were running to attack Fletcher while Laptop was being crushed, and the poodle standing up only meant that pain was an instant away for Laptop as the bitch gathered her bearings, bared her teeth to let out a vicious snarl, then lunged for him.
His response to this was a muffled yelp as her jaws snapped tightly around, not his scruff, but the base of his skull and his neck. Laptop flailed madly, but it wasn't enough as he was thrown a short distance. Though disoriented, he managed to land on his feet. He shook his head, trying to ignore the sparks flying wildly through the air that tried desperately to distract him. The little brown Burmese's tail wagged and flicked like crazy. Focus, Laptop. Just focus. The feline looked around, seeing several dogs trying to gang up on Fletcher now. "Hey Fletcher! Watch behind you!" Laptop warned in a shrill wail.
"What do I do now...?" he whimpered as he watched the fight progress for an instant. Find the smallest enemy and attack it, dipshit! "Oh! Right!" Laptop's tail waved as he sought out the smallest creature he could find, the fox that was aiming on leaping for Fletcher's back. However, something else caught his eye; one dog had run to one end of the hall and was running back, sliding across the floor in an aim to take out all of Fletcher's feet at once. "Fletcher, the dogs are trying to trip you up!" Quit telling how to fight and get your ass in there to help him!
Laptop nodded vigorously and ran at the fight again. He was pretty sure that the other canines were busy with whatever schemes they had to take down Fletcher, so he was fairly certain he wouldn't be noticed or too awfully cared about. All he had to do was run for the fox and take him down. If he'd gotten to the fox unnoticed, Laptop intended to leap into the air and try to ram into the fox's side to dislodge it from Fletcher's back. That was all he could think to do. He was so rushed! So much was expected of him... For all he knew, he'd end up crashing right into Fletcher!

If she'd had the strength, she would have joined the other canines to fight, but it was being used just to keep her standing here. Her fractured mind was whispering to her, and there was no way in the world she could ignore it, no matter how much she wanted to. What if all these canines die because of you? It asked her. No. There are others here too, others who need rescuing. But you were the one who talked to them, distracted them. If they hadn't been inside your cell when Fletcher came, this would never have happened. . . NO! Leave me be. The thought almost formed into a word on her lips, and she had to clench her teeth to keep from crying out. It they thought that she was mad, they might leave her here. But you are mad. Unhinged. Just thinking that proves you are. Have you learned nothing from all of this, you scum? Scum. Whore. Worthless. Weak. The words echoed in her mind, playing over and over like a CD playing the same track over and over, in time with her heartbeat.
Shaking her head to clear it, the Arctic Wolf watched the fight that was ensuing. Her cry to Fletcher had been ignored; despite her aching head, she managed to get her mouth to obey her mind. This time she wasn't speaking to anyone; she tipped her muzzle to the roof and gave vent a loud howl which echoed down the corridor. Her mouth dry, she swallowed, and waited to so if her cry had been heard by others. A moment later, there was a thud from somewhere up the corridor, behind where the crippled lion was and near where Maestro was. A few moments later, the door burst open, and a once-magnificent Giant Schnauzer emerged. Its beard was in bloody tatters; its triangular ears had been ripped to shreds, and one of its eyes was a mess, but still, barely, had the power of sight to it. Sighting Fletcher, the dog gave an angry growl and headed for the lion, aiming for his exposed back. Rikki watched silently now, hoping that the canines would be able to overpower the crippled lion and the cats.

The rain seemed to fall harder as time stretched. The persistent drip of it as it wove dark trails in his fur was beginning to grow tiresome. Orbit let his golden fur fluffy slightly, trying to dry the dark splotches of damp, but the sun was not strong enough to do him any justice. He spat quietly, drawing a large, clumsy paw over his whiskers. They had better hurry up with their decision, because of they didn't, he was going to go without them.
Nebula seemed just as eager as he to get out, which relieved him. He knew it would take more than just his word to persuade Alex, especially since Orbit was too used to brutal honestly to slither his way through some fibs. Of course, lies were unneeded in this situation. What good would they do?
Orbit stretched his deep brown eyes wide, emphasizing his snowy sister's pleas. Well, half of it was that, and the other half was making sure that he didn't fall asleep again. God forbid he fell asleep in the middle of some raging battlefield. The thought of the action below made the itch in his paws more prominent.
Alex seemed to resign after some final words from Nebula. Not even he could resist the temptation of exploration probably. Orbit grinned, his whiskers quivering in his anticipation. "Now that's what I like to hear!" He purred, cuffing his brother's ear playfully. "We don't have to go far, I just wanna see what a dog looks like." |
Orbit's eyes stretched wide again, as if he found the mere thought daunting. The tawny brown cub would have padded off immediately, eager to get a glimpse of the action, but he stopped in his tracks as he heard Denim call, refusing to leave the safety of the rooftops. Orbit let out a drawn out sigh, trying to be as dramatic as possible (given his sense of humor) and nudged his smaller brother, nearly knocking him over in the process "C'mon, I know you wanna see what's down there too! Don't be a spoil sport Deni!" He purred, a broad smile stretching across his face. "You can't possibly wanna stay up here in the rain while there's a fight goin' on down there!" The lion cub's eyes were shimmering at the idea of exploration. Sure, he was annoyed that Denim was holding them back, but he was more so intrigued by the idea of actually seeing a real live dog. Assuming that any were alive, after facing off against obviously superior felines.
Orbit plopped back on his haunches next to Nebula and drew a paw over his ear, scattering a few stray raindrops. It may take a bit of persuasion, but there was nothing that would make Orbit believe that they couldn't change Denim's mind.
A real live dog. Orbit could not suppress the grin that played on his features. -------- Words: 478 Muse: Average Notes: N/A

Lilith smirked as her paw landed into the small feline's skull knocking him into the floor as a large smack was heard. Her duo colored eyes watched him dart off towards Jade as a loud roar was heard. The husky watched Jade, Maestro, Quinn, and K9 jump into the battle as she shook her skull. It seemed like that left her to go find the cubs of Florence and Panja. She had no problem with that. Even if it was one cub, she would be proud. First she needed to find them then signal to the rest of their location before they could snatch all four and go run off and complete their mission.
Lilith sniffed the air as she trotted down a hall way, tail curled up over her back as she could feel her mouth water. The thought of possibly ripping those cubs apart was tempting...though it wouldn't be possible in the hospital. Their cries and blood would trigger that crippled male lion to follow after her. Lilith did pause as her ears pricked forward when she could smell the scent of the cubs. Skull thrown back a howl came out from her vocals, calling her pack mates to the location of these cubs as she snarled and darted forward. Their voices could be heard as the husky charged forward. She used her sense of smell and hearing to guide her. "Come here, cubbies!" She chuckled, voice dark with menace as her nails clicked upon the floor. She could already feel their bodies within her mouth.
OOC: I'm guessing the cubs are in the halls? Or just coming in from the rooftop?

There is a flurry of movement as suddenly the more powerful of prisoners begin to attack Fletcher, leaving the Scavengers time to escape his clutches and carry on with what they've been sent here to do. Fletcher is too distracted with five dogs attacking him from different angles to realise that the Scavengers have sneaked past to continue with the rest of the ordeal.
However... before Quinn is able to escape, Fletcher deals a powerful blow to his flank, tearing out flesh and rendering him weak and hurt. It is obvious that the wound is fatal, and it will only be a matter of time before Quinn will no longer be able to stand.
Meanwhile, the cubs are situated on the roof. With Denim finally giving in, they freeze mid-step when they hear Lilith's calls. The dogs are close to their target. It won't be long before the dogs realise where the cubs are and get them.
ooc; just to clarify, Quinn is fatally wounded! D: You are allowed two more posts with him <3 As far as I'm aware, Smiff is too busy to rp out the actual blow to Quinn, so feel free to rp the effects of it. And a note to Xark: the cubs are still on the roof! And to the rest of the Scavengers, go do what you need to do (; (if NPCs are needed to take the cubs, feel free to use ex-prisoners).

The sudden blow to his flank didn’t feel as something critical to Quinn in the first place, but as he leapt out of the crippled lion’s grip, he felt like something was completely wrong. He couldn’t support properly on his right hind leg, so his rear was about to collapse as he landed on the floor. He panted as he fought to keep his balance on the sudden very slippery floor and humped away on safe distance to the big feline as five prisoners attacked him in rage. As he looked back, watching the sight of bloody ex-prisoners fighting their former superior, Quinn was about to lose his balance again. His body didn’t do what he commanded it to and from the scene of crime, he found the trace of blood… coming from him. The line of blood looked like a small path which lead right to him, and it wasn’t before his eyes were locked on the wound that he really started to feel sick. The adrenaline was slowly going out of his body, or was it his energy? He felt like someone dragged it from his entire being, like he grew weaker for every time he tried to breathe. And his breath... He was heaving after air as the blood from the wound ran out more fatally with every step he took. Would he even get out of the hospital? Would he die here? Hell yes he was going to die here, but not right on the spot. There were still a few prisoners in the cells, and he wouldn’t collapse before every single one of them was out. That was his drive.
But would he be able to succeed?
He inhaled deeply as he moved on to the next door. The lion was, Fletcher, was busy with fighting the other dogs, which gave the Great Dane time to focus on the prisoners who were left. How he managed to do it, he didn’t know, but first he opened one door, then another and then another… as the last canine came limping out of its cell, Quinn’s whole body shivered from the efforts. He’d never felt as exhausted as now, but still, he felt like he could take a step more, a step more and a step more. He followed the prisoners to the staircase. ”You go on from here, get out as fast as you can fellows..” he said with a deep, weak voice. The prisoners started to descend and Quinn suddenly collapsed on the floor, completely exhausted, and completely unable to raise his big body at the time being. The only thing he could do now was looking after his fellow Scavengers, hoping they would do their best to succeed with their job.

Watch my moves! Read my mind! Hear my voice!
Claws, fur, fangs... blood. It all flashed before K9's eyes in a breakneck scene of action packed horror. Or, was it horor packed action? He didn't care to know. He'd watched with a blank stare, still trying to right himself from his ill fated attempt at a sliding floor attack - Really, what an ill conceived move! - as the lion had all but completely crushed Quinn. As Quinn had freed a few more prisoners yet, trailing his life's blood as he carried out his mission, K9 called to his companion, Maestro. "Maestro, the prisoners have this battle in hand! Quick, help me find our point of interest!" Those last words carried a particular meaning to them, that K9 hoped his friend would hear and understand.
He started down the hallway, and caught site of Quinn, laying in a pool of glistening red, blinking away his last moments. Something in K9's mind told him to simply continue on. It was war. Lives were lost. It's what happens. But still, he had been in close quarters with these canines far too long to pretend not to care, even to himself. He rushed to Quinn's side, not even glancing at his wounds. There would be no healing this poor Dane. Out of respect, he sat beside his fellow. One eye on Quinn, one eye on the mayhem around this emotional scene. He looked solemn, but not sad. Quinn didn't need the heatbreak of a mother, or the comfort of a lover, only the recognition of a fellow soldier. K9 sat at his side, stern look of respect on his brow. He had nothing to say that his silence couldn't. So, he simply nodded to his comrade.
Quinn's eyes closed softly, as he breathed his last breath. One... two... three. The seconds passed in precious moments of silence, and finally K9 stood. Nodding in salute to his fallen comrade one last time, before he shot a glance to Maestro, and darted down the hallway to it's very end. An intersection, of course. Left, right, and forward. K9 weighed his options, but something peaked his interest. Directly around the corner to his left, sat the base of a staircase. This staircase led straight to the rooftop exit. K9 wasn't certain if he had imagined the scent, or not, but a little voice in his mind cried, Cubs!
The logistics machine that was his mind wheeled against the notion. There were innumerable feline aromas oozing from every crevice of this wretched hospital. How could he have picked out something so faint as the particular scent of young? He took a few steps forward, toward the hallway ahead, but as he passed that damp, dark staircase something in him just couldn't let go of the notion that he was passing by the Scavengers primary prize in this hunt.
He turned sharply and dashes up the staircase, before his mind could stop him. He took the steps two at a time, reaching the closed metal door in seconds. He pressed his nose to the base of the door, scenting the air that flowed through the unmeasurable small crack beneath it. He took three careful breaths, paying close attention to new scents, attempting to sift through the old. It was faint, so faint that it still only felt like a strong hunch, but K9's gut feeling told him there were, in fact, lion cubs on the other side of this door. K9 had learned long ago, in his days in the military bomb squad, that his nose and his gut feeling were a very dependable team.
Faster than he had made it up, K9 was back down the staircase, whipping around the corner to signal his comrades. Maestro, Jade! The roof! The nest is on the roof! You could take the dog out of the military, but you couldn't take the military out of the dog. Code speak and short sentences would always be K9's style, whether his other canine companions preferred it, or not. He just hoped they would quickly realize what "the nest" was, and make haste to him. He couldn't barge through the rooftop door on his own. The cubs would likely just scatter. It had smelled as though at least three were up there. He cursed those sinfully large felines, should the litter be some terribly cumbersome number, like six or seven. Leave it to Florence to have more cubs than even a small canine army can carry away.
