Caught off guard, his hold on the lion's back loosened, and he felt himself tumble off onto the ground. Short as his strike had lasted, he had succeeded in what he'd meant to do, which was spare K9 from a painful death by by flattened. He scrambled upright in time to see a pile of canines converging to attack the big cat. It was pointless to jump back into the fray, there were other things they had to take care of, and with the lion's attention diverted, there was no better chance to fulfill their mission. Turning his back on the fray, Maestro rushed on down the hall, seeking out K9 as he did so. "Quick, help me find our point of interest!" He understood immediately, giving a curt nod in response.
He was about to move on, until K9 came to a halt beside Quinn, who had collapsed in a spreading mass of red. It took only a quick glimpse of the massive gash to tell him that the Great Dane was doomed, and there was nothing that could be done to prevent or delay death. That was obvious. Maestro hadn't come into the hospital expecting every one in their little group to survive. Neither did the others, unless they were absolute fools. As a result, he saw no reason to risk jeopardizing their overall operation because of one casualty. Time was ticking on, and he didn't plan on seeing how long the recently freed prisoners could last, or whether they could bring down the lion. Why K9 had stopped he could not fathom, but he said nothing and gave no sign of his impatience to get on with it.
Upon reaching the three-way intersection, Maestro halted, glancing down each corridor, searching for the place that seemed most suitable. Someplace where his friend couldn't be disrupted while setting up the preparations. At that point, he heard K9's barks preceding his return. The nest? That had to be the cubs. He thought fast. Now was their chance. "Lilith, Jade, go take care of the roof, and hurry!" he snapped. It was risky, sending only two to grab the elusive cubs. If there were more than they could hold, the two dogs could always try threatening the third with its siblings' lives. Meanwhile, he met the German shepherd's gaze, silently willing him to catch on. "K9 and I will stay here to keep any cats from following."

Jade snarled as she finished dealing with feline creature that had knocked her to the ground, and turned to deal with a small group of smaller cats that had been attmepting to advance on them, she grabbed one with her jaws while her paws descended upon another's back, snapping it in half, the feline her her jaws was used to smack aside one of his comrades and then, with as much force as she could muster, she flung his head into the floor, grinning with sadistic satisfaction at the loud SNAP that came from the force. She spun a moment later, realizing what had happened almost instantaniously, K9 had almost been killed in her moment of distraction, Maestro had arrived and was helping against the lion, with a glance about she recognized Lilith's tail vanishing, and assumed the bitch was off to find the cubs, she looked to the doors to the other prisoners, but was unable to figure out what to do because a moment later, the lion attacked Quinn, dealing a blow that would no doubt be fatal. Jade yelped in fear for her comrade. "Quinn!" She barked in alarm, she had almost reached him when he spoke. ”You go on from here, get out as fast as you can fellows..” She wimpered, and spoke softly. "You were a brave soldier and a good friend Quinn." Her voice may or may not have reached his ears, for at that moment, K9's voice caught her attention as well. "Maestro, Jade! The roof! The nest is on the roof!" She assumed that by nest he meant where the cubs were, and turned to Maestro for orders, which came almost instantaniously. "Lilith, Jade, go take care of the roof, and hurry!" Jade froze in dread for a moment, the roof? He was sending her to the roof. Jade! Snap out of it, Quinn just died for this mission, would you make his sacrifice in vain?! The more sensible part of her brain screamed at her. She growled, no she wouldn't, and pelted off towards the stairs, making her way up she finally caught up to Lilith, hearing the female's dark chuckle. "We have our orders." She murmured to herself as she approached the roof, trotting up the stairs, she shouldered her way onto the roof. "Well look at that, all in one place, how convenient." She snarled, her hackles raising as she waited for Lilith to join her.

Lilith had orders as she heard Maestro bark her and Jade's names. She however did a quick roll of her two toned eyes as she felt her fur prickle in annoyance. Did she look like she needed some orders. The husky glanced back to wait for the poodle as her ears pricked forward with interest at the sight of the bloody and dead, plant eating mutt. Looked like fighting with the lion had been a bad choice after all. Especially with the chuck that was missing out of the Great Dane's side.
Shaking her skull, Lilith growled as she pushed herself to the opening in the roof after the poodle as her two toned orbs settled on the cubs. The female settled her eyes on the male, white cub. He seemed to have a leader arua circling his body as she dashed forward in a rush. The bitch attempted to close her jaws on the scruff of his neck. It would help to carry him without causing any...or much harm to the cat. Sadly the Scavengers would need these four alive.
Lilith thought to how a nuisance it would be to have to deal with the neck breaking weight of these lion cubs in her jaws. They were probably two months or so and wouldnt be so light as if they were snatching them as new borns. The thought caused her to pin back her ears but she needed to focus as she did her best to try and angle her jaws to indeed grab the rat.
OOC: Sorry for the wait >.< She's going for Alex!

Watch my moves! Read my mind! Hear my voice!
K9 half listened to Maestro's commands, vaguely processing the last sentence to catch the meaning behind the words. He saw Jade's poofy rear head up the staircase towards the young felines hidden on the roof and Lilith dart after the same goal. His eyes glinted like stone with disdain as he saw Lilith so coldly pass her fallen comrade, Quinn. No time for respect, he supposed. He turned his back on the careless husky and let his springlike legs fire him like a bullet down the hallway strait across from the staircase that now held so much interest.
K9 had no idea what he was really looking for, but you could never convince him of that. As long as he kept looking, he would find it. They were on the top floor of this structure, hardly the ideal place for the key part of his mission. He had to get down. He passed elevator shaft after elevator shaft, useless things. No electricity made stairs his only option. Finally he found a staircase. He charged down the steps for as far as they could go, till his paws landed in a large open area of sorts. This was likely the outer edge of the building, so he looked to the hallway splitting off from the center of the room and started down it's narrow way.
A turn to his left, fifty feet down, a turn to his right, thirty more feet forward, another left, then another. The hallways were like an endless serpent. K9 took great care to never make the same turn more than twice, lest he go in mindless circles. It felt like the center of the building now. He hadn't seen a window in quite some time, which was a good sign. The size of the rooms became regulated. He had little to no doubt he was in the heart of the maze.
He began looking in doors now. A quick glance through each collapsing door to judge the size of the space. Office after office were open to him, but finally he skidded to a stop at the sight of something much more to his needs. A large metal door, the kind that open to exterior areas stood, barely, with a chill seeping through it's cracked frame. With a loud snarl, K9 charge and threw the full weight of his form into the dilapidated opening. Run, leap, slam. Run, leap, slam. The cycle continued until every bone in his body ached with the shock of impact. Every blow landed with an audible crack in the walls edging the door. The fourth and final blow sent the door leaning with a groan, threatening to fall on K9 as he lay on the floor, reeling for a split second from his last charge and ram.
The groan of the door caught his attention and he scrambled to his paws in time to backstep awkwardly out of the landing zone, almost. Despite his simultaneous backward ducking motion, the metal door caught his left ear. A few attempts to wriggle it loose were futile, and there was no way to ease the weight of the door from this position. Without thinking - had he though, the strength would have left him - he tore free of the door's grip, leaving a good two inches of the top of his ear behind. The bleeding looked worse than it felt, thankfully. It would stop eventually. Although, with success so close to his reach, there was a good chance a bleeding ear would be the least of his ailments soon.
He shook away the blur in his vision to plunge into the dark reaches of what seemed to be a basement, or atleast a storage room. No lights, of course. There were cracks in the walls and doors, letting little tendrils of sunlight leak in. Clearly he wasn't underground. Willing his eyes to handle the darkness, he went to the first primary beam he could find, in the center of the room, and went to work on his mission.

Alex stopped in his tracks and stared at the two large shadows that materialized out of the stairwell. He didn’t need to stop and think about what they were, he knew the answer right away: Dogs. A tremor of fear coursed through his entire frame. They were exactly like his parents described, only much uglier and scarier than what his imagination could come up with. Their eyes burned like flames in the darkness as they stared at the four cubs with an evil hunger. Alex’s mind began whirling in panic, and before he could try and focus on what to do, one of the monsters bolted towards them at terrifying speed. Automatically he leaped in front of his siblings, the instinct to protect them overpowering his fear for the moment.
He let out a high squeak of pain as teeth seized the back of his neck. Alex scrambled uselessly, his tiny claws scraping against the roof in an effort to escape the dog’s grip, but before he knew it he was lifted into the air by the tender skin of his nape. It was painful to be held like this; when one of his parents carried him this way, their teeth were gentle and their jaws had no pressure. With how this dog was holding him, he could feel her fangs cutting into his flesh.
And almost even worse than the pain was the smell. He remembered once hearing that dogs never washed themselves the way cats did, and now he believed it. Being so close to the husky, he thought he was going to pass out from the disgusting stench of her fur and her breath. Both the smell and the pain of her grip caused his eyes to water a little. He didn’t want his siblings to see him crying, so he shut his eyes tightly when he yelled back to them, “Run, guys! Go get someone to help!”
He didn’t have any clue about who might be around to help them, though. Most of the adults were out fighting elsewhere. But the most important thing was to make sure Denim, Orbit and Nebula were safe, so even if he ended up being killed he would at least have been able to protect them. His mother and father would be proud of him for that.
It was then that he remembered what he was told about being brave, and Alex realized suddenly that he couldn’t just let this beast take him without a fight. He had to be a warrior like his parents, he had to defend himself. The little cub started twisting around wildly, yowling and thrashing his claws against Lilith’s chin in an attempt to make her drop him.

"Speech"
The sounds of barking and savaging were getting slowly closer, and Denim felt a sick feeling at the pit of his stomach. Freezing, he watched as his siblings began to make their way towards the steps, just as Denim stopped, a few metres behind them. There was something not right, and his whole body was screaming at him to not go down those stairs under any circumstances. Grimacing, the whiff of the canines was getting stronger, and suddenly two appeared in the doorway, blocking their exit. The husky looked like she wanted to sink her teeth into each of their bodies until they were no longer bleeding. Unfortunately, it seemed Alexander was closest, and she was immediately lunging towards him, gripping her teeth into the scruff of his neck. Frozen, Denim thought he was about to watch the murder of his older brother. Eyes darting to his other siblings, he was glad that they were safe for not.
Not for long, however. One escaped prisoner had joined the husky and the poodle, and was looking for his next target. This time it was aiming for his younger sibling, Nebula. Heart in his throat, Denim began to back away, well aware that more dogs could be arriving on the roof any time now. They would have no chance of escape if there were more dogs to surround them. As Alex commanded them to run, Denim wasted no time turning in fear, and scrambling towards the edge of the rooftop. He stared down at the long drop below, knowing that he would not survive the jump if he were to go. Taking in a shaky breath, Denim looked back at his siblings and the dogs, before deciding the chance it, and run out the door the dogs had come from. He knew the quickest way to get to the exit, and hopefully the rest of the dogs would've fled by that time.
Whirling around, Denim cast an apologetic look to his three siblings, before running for his life, past the dogs, past his family, and through the door and down the stairs into the bowels of the hospital. His heart was racing erratically, and Denim thought he might be sick from nerves and fear. He spared a thought for his parents, who would most likely be disappointed and angry that he had fled like a coward from the attack. There was a chance he may never see his two brothers and sister again, and it may be all his fault. Denim quickly shook away the thought. There was no use worrying about such, horrible things. His mother and father would find them and bring them back to the Iris if they were taken hostage by the Tempest.
Racing down more steps, Denim nearly lost his footing from his desperation to escape the hospital. As he had passed the rooms containing the prisoners, he saw all the doors swung open wide. The prisoners had escaped, meaning that there were dozens of dogs now on the streets, lusting after felines' blood. Denim would have to hide until his parents came back and realised what had happened. He couldn't go wandering on the streets when there were released dogs and a battle going on nearby. I told them it was dangerous, Denim growled to himself, I told them that we shouldn't go downstairs. Look what would've happened if we had!
Gasping for breath, Denim reached the bottom of the final staircase. He bolted out the front door and looked back at the hospital, hoping that he wouldn't see one of his siblings being dangled off the roof of the building. Luckily, he saw nothing. Denim quickly slid into the alleyways nearby, hiding between the bins as he waited for the terrible day to be over.
ooc; just to clarify for anyone who went tl;dr, Nebula you're getting attacked by an NPC. ALSO, Lilith and Jade and NPC dog need to get out of there fast. Something epic is going to happen.

It was safe to say Orbit was not the brightest cub around. This was part of the reason disobeying was fun to him; he needed some way of drawing attention to himself, whether it be negative or not. The horrible barking noise of canines was become louder, then suddenly hushed. Orbit's ears swiveled forward, his paws propelling him toward the stairs. How eager he was to see what lie beyond. If only...
Every thought that had dwelt in his mind ceased to exist at two shapes lunged onto the rooftop. Orbit spun around, dazed, and faltered, stumbling backward. The fact that he was drowsy did not help to dignify his motion.
The dogs were horrifying; pictures of his mother's stories personified. They had thinner, elongated muzzles filled with dagger-like teeth. Their lips were drawn back, snarling, and their gazes thirsted for the flesh of the cubs. The husky, who had been in front, sprung forward, grabbing Alex roughly by the neck. “Run, guys! Go get someone to help!” The oldest cub cried. Orbit's mouth was open, gaping, but words failed him.
The lion finally shut his jaws, and he shook his head as if dispelling his thoughts. Orbit was always out for attention and this, or course, was no exception. He wanted nothing more than to look strong compared to his siblings (which was easy enough compared to Denim, but not so much the others). So the cub tried to mask his fear by sneering at the dogs, his eyebrow raised, challenging. "What's the matter, doggies? Too afraid to fight a grown lion, are ya? Have ta go after us instead?" He sneered. "Think you can get us this easily? You thought wrong!" Despite his efforts, his voice cracked slightly, letting out his true fear, and as he spoke he had begun to step away slowly. He could hear the sound of Denim scurrying away to get help. Secretly, he was relieved that Denim had gone so that he wouldn't have to instead. However, Orbit's heart ached at the thought that they may never see their sibling again. At least, if these dogs continued to get to them.
Orbit's mind was already reeling in exhaustion, and this encounter did nothing to dull it. But even still Orbit knew that he stood no chance against the canines should he try to attack them. It was suicide almost. But he was afraid that the dogs would grab him limply in their jaws as well, and he would have no way of helping out his siblings.
Paralyzed in the fear that he would make the wrong choice, he stumbled again, stepping backwards to avoid the canines. "Are parents are coming, ya know. I'll feel bad for ya when ya have to face them." He threatened, trying to buy himself pride, and more importantly, time. ----------- Words: 446 Muse: Blargh Notes: I didn't know what Orby was supposed to do so I just assumed he was supposed to stay

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,450,true] | [atrb=background,http://i56.tinypic.com/2qbetnd.jp] The sounds from below came louder, and Nebula wondered if the idea of going down to to see what the dogs looked like wasn't such a good one after all. This was confirmed in her mind when she heard pawsteps on the stairs leading to the roof. A moment later, a fluffy white body with a mouth full of dangerous looking teeth clambered onto the roof, snarling when it saw the four cubs. Now she was truly afraid. Was this a dog, like one Florence had told them about? To her, it certainly looked like something out of a nightmare. Her fear subsided slightly as it just stood there, as if waiting. Maybe it was too scared to try to do something to the cubs of the Iris Pride leaders. However, she thought too soon. Another dog, as big as the other and scarier, took one look at them and ran straight for Alex, grabbing him by the neck. Her brother cried out immediately, telling the three of them to run for help. Her heart pounded as if it was trying to break out of her chest; her head spun for a moment. It was all happening too fast. And Alex, caught by a dog? It didn't even bear thinking about.
The white cub spun around in time to see a dog lunge for her. It was a monster of a thing, a huge Rottweiler with old scars littering its body. Escaping its jaws by a hair's breadth, she ran underneath it and towards the stairs. The image of it looming up in front of her was etched in her mind, and she shuddered in horror. Denim rushed by her, managing to evade the dogs as he went, and she hoped that he had gone for help. Orbit was trying to stay away from the dogs, challenging them as he stepped away from them. It was chaos, and Nebula had no idea what to do. She had no hope of getting down the stairs like Denim, and besides, with Alex already caught, she couldn't leave. The one thing she'd feared most was happening: her family's lives were in danger, and she could do nothing to help them. A shiver ran down her spine at this thought, and her mind whirled with the enormity of it all. She stumbled backwards in an effort to avoid the Rottweiler as it came at her again, and found herself falling over the paws of the poodle, Jade.

Jade watched out of the corner of her eye as Lilith lunged, grabbing at the white male cub, and succeeding in grasping him none to gently at that Jade thought with a disaproving frown. Even if they were cats, they were innocent cubs... Oh well, they wouldn't kill them. She stood, trying to decide her target as one of the released prisoners, a scarred rottweiler, lunged for the little female, a small male managed to dart past her, Jade snarled, but was distracted as the little female landed at her paws. She growled at the escaped prisoner. "Grab the other cub, then let's get out of here, K9 and Maestro can only hold them off so long." She snapped, lunging down to grasp the female cub by the scruff. She kept a grip and lifted, the cubs were not newborns, and therefore were quite heavy, and she was not exactly as strong as a husky. She growled low in her throat in frsutration and slight pain as she lifted the cub. She turned, calling over her shoulder around the fur in her jaws. "C'mon! We gotta get outta here!" It came out muffled, but clear as she started to trot down the stairs, keeping her steps fast but careful. She made her way down fast, weaving around bodies of small cats thrown aside in the frantic escape of other prisoners, and trotted outside. She glanced up at the building briefly, stopping just outside. She let out a bark up at the higher floors, hoping K9 and Maestro could hear her, before turning and bounding off as fast as she could, keeping her grip on the cub as tight as she could without hurting her badly.

Everything had happened so quickly that Rosie was still reeling from the experience. After an odd looking Great Dane had swung open the door to the hospital, smiling dopily yet warmly at her, Rosie had at first been thoroughly confused. She had been locked in the hospital for several days, after she had accidentally strayed too far from her home, and was caught by some nasty looking cats. She had put up a fight, which resulted in a torn ear and a nasty gash on her face, before she had been dragged back to the blasted hospital. Luckily, that had been the extent of Rosie's injuries, was easily able to get to her paws and walk out of the confines of her room. Yet the further Rosie walked down the corridors, the more she realised that she had just stepped into a battlefield. There were several bodies, dogs and cats alike, lying, mangled, on the dirty ground. There were many injured dogs, who had been locked up in the hospital for far longer than Rosie ever had, and were barely able to move. She gazed around, heart clenching and her maternal instinct kicking in. They all looked so frightened, so helpless. Any minute now, another guard could come barreling down those steps, attacking everything in its path. Rosie turned to see other dogs racing up steps, looking as though they were running to the rooftops. Why would they want to go up there? There would be nothing of use to them up there, surely? Rosie shook the thought away. She didn't need to worry about those, there was the more pressing problem of getting the escaped prisoners out of the hospital. So many of them had been so wounded by the felines that they could barely stand. Rosie was horrified at the injuries she saw on many of the weakened dogs, and it made anger swirl up inside her. She knew the Iris Pride was ruthless, but she never realised just how evil they were. Padding up to a white wolf who was leaning against the grubby wall of the hospital, Rosie gazed at her gently. Many of the dogs were beyond help, most of whom could barely even stand, and were merely just dragging their bodies in effort to get out of the terrible hell they had been living in. This wolf looked promising, however. Rosie could see the pain in her eyes, yet at least she was standing. However, Rosie could see that the wall was taking most of her weight, and the darker wolf swallowed nervously. "I'm going to help," Rosie explained calmly, eyes gentle, "Lean on me so we can get out. I can't help but feel we don't have much time." Rosie spoke a little hurriedly, but she got her point across. Nudging her very gently, Rosie indicated for the white wolf to lean against her torso, so they could get out of there together. Slowly but surely, Rosie began to walk. ooc; yay for NPCs and unused tables | |

All she knew was that one moment, Quinn, the Great Dane, was alive and fighting Fletcher and the other cats, and the next moment he was dying as his lifeblood left him. Sadness and rage filled her simultaneously, but what could she do? She barely had enough strength to remain leaning against the was as it was. Then, suddenly, it seemed that the dogs had located something- Florence and Panja's cubs. Two of the dogs, both females, one the husky that had snapped at her before, and the other a poodle who had previously been fighting the felines, climbed the stairs that led to the roof, followed by several canines who had been freed. There were sounds of a scuffle; she could hear a small voice crying out, and then a small shape barreled past all the dogs, down the stairs, and away across the hospital. The German Shepherd sped off to do something unknown to the she-wolf, leaving the fox standing there as some of the escaped prisoners vented their fury on Fletcher and the other cats.
The Arctic wolf blinked as a she-wolf approached her and told her that she was going to help. It was just in time, too, as Rikki's legs had begun to shake a moment before, no longer being able to come with standing for so long in one position. The she-wolf told the former captive to lean on her, so that she would be able to help her get out of the Hospital. Nodding wordless, she leaned agaist the other wolf's torso at a gentle nudge from her, and they began to walk.

When her teeth latched onto the cub, a soft growl escaped her throat. Damn these cubs were heavy! Lilith would of ran off with the cub quietly but when she felt the tiny claws scratching at her chin. Keeping her grip firm the bitch shook her skull to rattle the cub's brain. The husky felt a whoosh of air as one of the cubs dashed past her legs. There was no way she would let go of the male she was holding onto. There was an aura of him that seemed to make him the little leader of his litter.
The two eyed female watched one of the escaped prisoners grab the last remaining cub as Jade grabbed the female. Jerking her skull towards the exit, Lilith ran down the stairs as she ran past the scene of the male lion along with all the canines fighting him. She didn't care much of what the others were doing. Her mission was to get the cubs out of the hospital and in the grip of the Scavengers.
Legs taking wide strides she ran as fast as possible out the front doors of the hospital. The husky could feel the heavy weight of the cub slow her down a bit. Her neck and jaws ached from the dead weight but her determination kept her going. She didn't slow down or stop to make sure the other two mutts were following. It would be their problem if they failed their part of this assignment. Not hers.

The escaped prisoner laughed loudly at the audacity of the final cub. Unluckily, he had let the other brown cub escape from under everyone's feet, but three out of four seemed like an excellent accomplishment. The dog, Barney, had no idea what these Scavenger's were planning, but he was going along with it. He began to slowly approach the final cub, menace gleaming in his crazed eyes. For too long he had been broken down by those fucking cats, and now he was going to get his revenge. As much as he wanted to kill the stupid, trembling cub, Barney resisted. It looked like they were going to be used for something else. "You have nowhere to run, kitty cat." Barney sneered as the Husky and the Poodle ran with the two white lion cubs in their jaws. Now it was Barney's turn, and it was his time to shine.
"Your parents aren't coming, kitty," Barney taunted, "We will be the last faces you'll ever see." With that, Barney lunged at the stupid cub, grabbing him by the scruff on the neck. He was heavier than Barney imagined, but he was a fairly large mongrel and had the strength to carry him. Digging into his scruff, Barney paid no more attention to what the cub may be saying, and instead ran as fast as he could, barrelling down the endless corridors until he reached the stairwell. He then reached the exit of the hospital, and ran straight for the doors. He was free. Barney cackled manically, with the cub still hanging from his jaws.

The time it took for Rosie to gently help the wolf to safety was excruciating. Although Rosie had not been hurt as much as other prisoners, she had gone without food and water for a few days now, and she could feel her legs begin to shake under the weight of the white wolf. Rosie refused to give up, however. It took several minutes to get to the end of the corridor, before they reached the stairs. This was going to prove difficult, but Rosie helped the lighter wolf the best she could. Luckily, they were only on the third floor. The two wolves had to tackle the steps one by one, and Rosie was sure that they would be caught limping down the stairwell. It was a miracle, however, when they weren't caught, and they eventually made it to the ground. Letting out a breath Rosie didn't realise she had been holding, she focused her eyes on the door. Nearly there.
"Come on,"
Rosie murmured quietly as she put one paw in front of the other, "Just a few more steps to go." |
Rosie sent the white wolf an encouraging smile, before they finally reached the front entrance. Rosie squinted in the harsh light, before she saw some figures standing just in front of the hospital. Three of the figures were holding cubs in their mouths, and Rosie gasped when she realised whose cubs they were. They had taken the heirs to the Iris Pride. Rosie didn't know whether that was incredibly brave, or incredibly stupid. [/div]

ooc; KAY. SO. THE CUBS ARE OUT. LILITH AND JADE ARE OUT. RIKKI AND ROSIE ARE OUT. GO MUD. GOGOGOGO.

Even as they disappeared up the stairs, he heard K9 burst into movement. There was no way of telling how long it would take for Lilith and Jade to grab the cubs; too slow, there was a chance this was the last time he'd see them; too fast, K9 might not even be ready, and the felines would realize the precious cubs they were supposed to protect were gone and give chase outside of the hospital. Then what use would their task be? Had he cared that his friend had ran off without waiting, that would have been reason enough. Either way, it didn't matter. This was one area of expertise that K9 knew more of, so he did not waste his breath calling for the shepherd to slow down.
Maestro set off at a run, following the scent trail instead of attempting to keep his friend in sight along the winding corridors. He was careful to keep in mind the countless turns. Deciding on a location was fine and dandy, but getting lost wouldn't help any when it came time for them to get out. It was a while before the fox caught up to his friend. Not knowing how to help quicken the preparations, he could only stand there, alert for any outside sounds. He could just hear the faintest traces of distant voices, carried through the empty, echoing hallways; his pelt tingled with a veiled sense of urgency. "Are you ready yet? We better get out soon." He hovered by the fallen door, ready to leave as soon as K9 finished.

Watch my moves! Read my mind! Hear my voice!
Click, beep, click, beep, beep, beep, one final press of a button and he was finished. It was in place, resting lightly against the concrete pillar in the center of this lower level room. The chill of the air seeped in through the only door he'd seen in the last few hours that led to the vast outdoors. His comrade hurried him along, but now all that was left to do was fight off his treacherous feelings, and get his mind back on task.
"Are you ready yet? We better get out soon."
Maestro urged him on, as the fox's eyes darted around, watching his friend's back as he worked. The work, however, was finished. All that was left to do now was start the countdown . . . and run.
A million emotions - he wasn't completely without them, after all - whirled through his chest as he engaged the ticking clock on the device. Sixty seconds. K9 sat, staring at it, until two of those precious seconds were gone. The third beep of the countdown jolted him from his mental freeze, and he broke into a run toward the aforementioned door behind him. Flying past his fox comrade, he willed his mind to block out all of the world, and focus only on getting to the right position to survive. Once he was outside, his legs continued to carry him forward, away from that dark place, and ominous beeping.
He turned on a dime, ducking behind an old vehicle, left to rot in the street a few yards from the hospital grounds. It was so silent out here. Suddenly he felt as though the silence would crush his skull. There were no signs of life, or death. Like nobody in the world existed, accept for him and Maestro. He stared into the black depths of the door in the distance, waiting for the fate that was about to erupt from the hospital's depths.
He wiped his mind, closed his eyes, ducked his head, pressed his paws tightly against his skull, and waited. Waited for the world to shake, the building to crumble from beneath, to a pile of rubble, consumed by a rushing fireball in an instant. He refused to think of his comrades inside. Refused to let his mind think of the lives that would inevitably be lost. This is what they would have wanted. For the end of cats. For the future of dogs. Three . . . two . . . one . . . boom.
