He payed no mind to the cats and dogs that were wandering the streets and giving him odd looks, even though he would agree that he was a strange sight: Here was a dog with short legs half carrying and half pushing a large book down the streets and sidewalks of the city. He had actually done the same with other books that were easier to carry. This particular book that the little dog was pushing was a book of cryptids, creatures that may or might not even exist along with other creatures that wasn't printed in the book that his former child owner had added. He couldn't read them but he could memorize certain information just by looking at a picture. He pushed the book one more block before he reached his destination, the school with a room that, hopefully wouldn't have anyone already living in it.
Theo pushed his book through the front door of the school and halfway down the hall until he reached a collapsing door. This first room that he entered had two large desks with papers that had both been left to collect dust. He pushed his book to the other side of the room until he reached another door that led to another fairly large room with another dusty desk and chair. This room was probably a principles or counselor's office but, for now, Theo made it his home. He didn't find the scent of any other dog or cat when he first came here. The little dog pushed his book underneath the desk along with some others that he brought here, out of sight of anyone who might see them and destroy them somehow.
With very little effort he maneuvered the rolling chair until it was facing a nearby window that looked out at the basketball courts and everywhere else that children used to play in. It took a little more effort for him to haul himself into the seat of the chair. He sat on his haunches as he stared out at nothing out of the window ad became lost in his thoughts.

What do you think, crack? You look pretty excited about where you're headed. Tony's bitter thoughts were aimed at none other than a crack in the sheetrock in the wall opposite of the desk where he laid. His legs crossed before him, chin resting on his paws, he fought to keep his sanity in this dreary place of boredom abyss. Cats and dogs alike loafed about, not too interested in nothing, but not bored enough to sleep it seemed. He tried to count the tiny cracks that stemmed from either side of the main crevice... but failed. How long could a cat count cracks? Honestly? One, two, three.. three and a half? Someone eat me, please?
With that lovely frame of mind, he stood, stretched his back into a high arch that resonated down to his splayed toes and leaped down to the hallway floor. His tail flicked as he caught his balance, and a strange sound brought his eyes up and over his right shoulder. There, just a few feet down the hall, was the most amusing thing he'd seen all day, all week even. A dog - funny looking little guy - pushed, dragged, tugged, and shoved a giant block of paper down the hallway. Tony stared, blank faced but with a gleam in his eye, as the dog pushed past him and through a door just a ways down the other end of the stretch of walls.
This was just too good to pass up. This dog, with the hilariously short limbs, had a story, Tony had no doubt. He trotted his way after the dog once he was through the broken old door. Peeking around the side, Tony saw him struggle his way into a chair near a desk, and it took every ounce of strength in the tom to hold in his snicker. Tony stared at the tall ears standing alone over the edge of the desk chair, deciding what his plan was. Go in friendly and pretend to be interested, or annoy outright? ...a little of both, I reckon.
With his mind made up, he slinked his way through the door without a sound - or at least as silently as a brash tom like Tony ever was - and creeped, quite dramatically, over to stand just beneath the chair where the Corgi sat. He looked up to the arm of the chair, and called in a friendly tone that meant, to anyone who knew him, that he wanted to have some fun. "Hello there! That's a great big book you have there! What you plan on doing with it?" |

As he sat in his chair and stared out the window he began to think, which is all he had to do now other than look for food and water. He was once again thinking of the virus that killed his owners and the other humans that used to inhabit the world. Humans almost always seemed to be making weapons to help them win wars, maybe someone made the virus and lost control of it somehow. He also questioned why it didn't seem to affect any of the animals, maybe it wasn't fatal to cats and dogs as it was to humans. His thoughts went to the creatures in his and his boys book. Some of them were supposed to be half human, maybe the virus got to them too.
As he pondered this he could see someone enter the room from their reflection in the window. Theo was immediately displeased when he realized it was a cat who had come into his room with what looked like a smile on his face. The smile of a trouble maker, it just seemed familiar somehow. He pretended not to notice him and continued to stare out the window with a now somewhat displeased expression on his face. If this cat did want to cause trouble or tried to steal his books he could easily be taken care of. The cat didn't look too much bigger than him.
Theo stared out the window even when the feline spoke. "I plan on keeping it, and looking at it whenever I want. What else would I do with it?"

Seeing that the dog hadn't even bothered to look down at him while responding, Tony assumed it was one of those stuck-up types. What was it about books and egocentric personalities? Tony would never understand the type. He couldn't imagine spending the time he set aside for running, jumping, leaping, flying, laughing, pranking, and a million other ploys for endless fun instead sitting at a desk staring out a window just moments after dragging a book twice his size down a corridor.
The dog wanted to keep it and look at it. That was it? Not only did he have incredibly inadequate plans for his paper filled block, but he acted as though he couldn't imagine what else you would do with it. What is the matter with this canine? Did someone forget to make him laugh as a pup? Tony's thoughts rang so loudly in his mind, he lost all attention the the strange face he was now making at Theo. A look of astonishment, horror, pity, and still vague amusement lit up the cat's features in a most intriguing fashion. Of course, it slowly turned back to pure amusement and mischief as Tony realized he had found what he was going to do this day. Teach this canine how to have a good time: preferably with an old book.
"What else would you do with it? Well all kinds of things!" Tony sounded like an overexcited preacher. He leaped swiftly to perch on the desk in front of the short legged canine, getting just close enough to his face to stare into his eyes and drill a point into his brain, but obviously not so close that he couldn't escape a blow with a paw or a bite for the head.
"There's all kinds of things you can do with something like that, man! You can slide on it, you could drop it off of high places, your could rip the pages out and listen to that amazing tearing sound again and again. Oh, or my personal favorite, you could rip it up and litter somewhere important in one of the pridelands. It's great to stake out till morning and see their ridiculous reactions when someone messes up their little worlds," he said with a dark chuckle. |

This cats idea of fun seemed a little familiar somehow. He looked at the cat out of the corner of his eye as the feline described ways that could destroy his books. Dani was a sweet girl, but she could be a bit of a troublemaker too. When she was a puppy she would play with anything within her reach. That included, much to her dismay, his boys sister's stuffed animals. She even tried to chew one of the boys books, but it was one he used for school, not as important as the book they had done research for.
He left his thoughts before the cat had finished talking. This wasn't his sister, this was a feline: the species responsible for Dani not being here. A deep growl emitted from his throat and he bared his sharp fangs at him. "Touch that book, find yourself missing a jugular." He was referring to the large book he had pushed in earlier. The was the one he was most attached to, it held too many memories for him just to destroy. For a moment he stared at the cat before jumping off the seat ad walking under the desk. He took a book that was easier for him to carry in his jaws and tossed it from under the desk. "If you're so intent on having your fun, use that one." He said and only managed to put his front paws on the book he was pushing earlier. "This one is off limits." He said ad waited to see what the cat would do.

As would be expected - but, of course, Tony didn't expect it - his ideas for the fun and games of destroying Theo's book weren't very well received by the stumpy canine. When the growling started, Tony quickly (but not at a frightened sort of speed) withdrew his face to a safer distance, with a look of pure surprise and misunderstanding.
"Well, you don't have to be uncivil about it! Just trying to livin up your day, little guy," he called down to Theo, as he was leaping from the chair and retrieving a much smaller volume of reading from beneath the desk.
As the canine offered up his less than prized reading material for Tony's amusement, he quickly forgot all about books. His eyes landed on the now empty seat sitting atop a single pillar, just waiting to be spun in circles and rolled about the room. His eyes wide, tail . . . wagging, Tony leaped from the desk into the seat of endless amusement with a cry of joy.
"Oh my goodness! Look at yet another great source of fun you're wasting, friend! Forget those books, this chair is a party all by itself. Don't tell me you don't want to join in the fun!" He spun the chair around a third time, stopping it with his paws to lean down and speak directly to Theo, who still stood on the floor having just retrieved the smaller book. "C'mon up, buddy. You know you want to," he said with a knowing look and an outreached paw. |

He was going to give the cat a perfectly good book to destroy and, like a hyperactive kitten, the cat had seemingly abandoned the idea of playing with the books for spinning around in the now empty seat Theo was sitting in only a minute ago. The feline spun in the chair a few times before inviting the short dog to join him. Theo tilted his head in confusion. It looked like this stranger could find some sort of entertainment with almost anything, unlike Theo.
To him fun was playing games that involved finding hidden creatures, fun was running around in a wide area, whether it was the backyard of his former home or the park. He did do things he was told not to do, he would probably do the same things the cat does if his owners hadn't taught him not to do things like knock over trash cans or even tear into his boy's sister's stuffed animals and other things humans frowned upon for some reason. Excluding his favorite book, they weren't of any use to anyone now. 'Well,' He started to think for a moment. 'No ones around to say 'no' anymore.'
He tilted his head at the cat. "Spinning in a chair is fun?" All of the animals in the city could do what they wanted now, some wasted their time fighting over the city while loners went and did as the pleased. Maybe that kind of meant that loners already rule the city but without the need for any insane rulers.
His mischievous pup-like side started to surface though it didn't show. He climbed back into the seat of the chair and started to happily spin in the chair.

Tony held his grin, as Theo appeared to be thinking over his proposal. He could see a light sparking in the stumpy canine's eyes. Just in time, he ducked out of the way and onto the floor to make room for Theo in the spinning chair of endless amusement.
The picture of freedom, Theo spun round, and round, and round in the human seating contraption. Enjoying himself to the fullest, Tony was certain. "See! I told you it was fun, buddy!" He called up in a jovial tone, feeling a hint of playful jealousy as he watched the dog have his fun.
While Theo was happily preoccupied, Tony hopped his way back onto the table, and noticed the large volume still sitting, open. He thought he might see what Theo's usual idea of fun was while he waited for him to be finished trying something new. He leafed through the pages, looking at pictures of strange creatures he had never laid eyes on in his life. Little shapes covered the pages in neat rows, like they were the most important part of it. Of course, Tony couldn't read a word, but he was curious what it could mean.
Without pulling his muzzle out of the book, he called back to Theo in a lightly confused voice, feeling almost tentative, worried a question like this would unleash a torrent of confusing information Tony wasn't quite ready for. Still, not to be deterred by the possibility of things getting intense, he asked for a favor. "So, Theo, ol' buddy ol' pal, how about you inlighten me on your idea of fun now? What does all this gobbilygook really mean?" |

The little dog hadn't noticed that the cat had jumped off as he happily spun around in the large chair. Theo never considered that, for some, simply spinning around in a chair could be entertaining. He chuckled a little as he spun around a few more times. "I guess you're right. I never thought of doing this before." He stopped and maneuvered the chair so he would face the cat again. He lay down on his belly with his forepaws hanging off of the seat.
He was looking at the book Theo was pushing earlier. No doubt the feline didn't know what exactly what the contents of the large piece of literature held so he wasn't surprised at his question. He jumped out of the chair and next to Tony and looked at the book.
"This particular book has creatures that either may not exist or just haven't been found. They're all called cryptids. The others are mysteries that humans couldn't figure out themselves. My idea of fun is acting as a detective and finding them." He sat down on his haunches and turned a page in the book. "Like this one." The picture was blurry but you could see a black form running across hills. "This one's called the Beast of Dartmoor. Some think it's a big cat in a place where it's not supposed to be, some think it's a huge boar." He tilted his head and stared at the blurry picture in the book. "I think that black lions are extremely rare."

Almost like a spirit, Theo appeared by Tony's side, burying his gaze deep into the book, and deftly explaining it's contents. Tony struggled to pay attention, to absorb the information, but it just wasn't his cup of tea. Until, that is, it sounded interesting. Mysterious, that was right up Tony's alley. A black lion? Tony had never even heard of such a thing. It made sense though. There were white lions, right? Why not black?
"So, someone took this...picture - I think that's what these frozen looks are called? - but they're not sure what it's a picture of? It could be a black lion...I hope it is! Wouldn't that just be something to see? White lions and black lions, running around like killer zebras, sort of..." His imagination ran away with his mind. He shook his head as he got it back, pushing the mental image of a monochromatic herd of feline power away - for another day.
He looked up to Theo again, and a mischievous smile slowly creeped onto his face. "I've just had an idea, Theo. What say you and me set off to uncover some mysteries outrselves, huh?! We could look for whatever you want! As long as it gets us out of this dreary old building, and doing something that might make an interesting story someday, I'm all game! What pages in there might tell the story of a mysterious creature that once roamed the streets of the city?" Tony flicked out his paw, hurriedly leafing through the pages, caught up in his own grand scheme. |
