The Scavengers have been divided into three groups, each heading for Hexasol on their own as to arouse as little suspicion as possible. This group is headed through Puzzlewood forest a couple of miles away from Hexasol. You've been travelling for days and the journey has taken its toll. The members of this group would be:
Group 2: - Maestro (commander) - Lilith - K9 - Cass - Dasher - Trixie
But oh noes! In front of you, blocking your way, is suddenly an angry mother bear with two kids! It can only be a minute or two before she gets your scent, and soon she'll be at your throats. Good luck fending off that <3 What do you do?!
This Thread is for Scavenger Members ONLY This is a thread for you to play a bit around with your characters, and become familiar with them. There is no posting order. Go crazy, have fun <3

Every bone in the lithe sighthound's body seemed to ache, begging with each throb for to stop journeying for a moment to take a nap. The female knew stamina was one of her best traits, but it did not apply to this situation, and even her stamina couldn't keep up with a traveling size of this proportion. The erratic ground and crowded space didn't help, either. Gnarled roots sprang out from every which direction, threatening to trip any dog who wasn't staying focused. The earth was soft beneath her paws, with hidden burrows occasionally dropping out underfoot. Trixie had already experienced that humiliation. In fact, it had been only thirty minutes since the mucky ground had suddenly collapsed under her weight and she found half of her body about a foot underground. Fortunately, she recovered quickly and only suffered from a brief blow to her dignity. Too bad I didn't land on whatever was in there! I'm starving. Trix was sure the whole lot of them were traveling on empty stomachs, unless some of the canines had managed to hunt on the way. That, of course, was difficult because of the terrain and the fact that getting lost in this forsaken copse of mossy trees wasn't hard to do. So far it had been every dog for him or herself. Trixie wasn't good friends with any of the dogs even outside of the troop she walked with, and didn't know them very well. Lately she had been too tired to make any sort of effort to meet any of them, and now she was regretting it. Chatting to a friend would have definitely lightened the mood and kept her mind off of reality. Trixie huffed quietly to herself, too focused on her paws to see what was looming up ahead. Despite the frigid season, there was little or no snow on the ground, mainly because the trees blocked out the sky in these parts. Even with only their spindly, naked branches sprawling out, little sky could be seen. It was all quite eerie in truth, but Trixie pushed away her fear. There was no time for childish imaginations running amuck now. They had a job to do. This 'job' was to bring her extra satisfaction, even though fooling the feline guards had brought a priceless amount of laughter to her soul. She felt secure with her band of cat-haters, and personally couldn't wait to tear into the cats. There was always a risk of death, but that didn't scare the intelligent girl. She was confident of her choice and had no plan of backing down now. They had trekked so far, and these darn woods never seemed to end. She was prone to impatience as it was, since most of her tasks were finished quickly because of her speed and love to run. Thankfully none of this frustration was due to her companions since she couldn't go any faster even if she wanted to at this point. She was miserable, on the verge of cranky, and fatigued. And then the saluki found herself walking into a faint, but massive, shadow. Her eyes widened and she snapped her head up. Her gaze landed straight on the eyes of the raging mother bear. Oh....my..... Trixie scrabbled backwards, avoiding a death-blow to the side of the head by a mere few seconds. She gasped, feeling incredibly stupid and ashamed at the same time. What am I doing?! Focus you idiot, focus! She looked frantically around at her group-mates, wondering what they would do next. But before that, she needed to figure out what she was going to do before the bear lunged again. Calculations flashed through her mind. I can easily outrun this bear...I'm likely the fastest out of this group...maybe I could lead her away from everyone else? She frowned and scooted further behind a tree, flinching as the bear raked one of her claws across the bark and ambled closer. But what if I get lost... Her eyebrows furrowed. For some reason, I don't think flirting or lying will help me get out of this one."''Ey, you guys, I can run off and lead 'er away if you want," She called out, offering up her best idea. Either that, or they would fight. That sounded silly though. Countless lives could be wasted, even though the bear was outnumbered. Grizzlies were strong beyond belief, and it would only take one blow from one of those massive paws to send a dog directly to the grave. Trix looked over at Maestro, the group leader, wondering what he would say. They needed to react, and quick. With the tree as protection in front of her, Trix didn't even know where the bear was or if she was attacking someone else. Plus, she was positive that her deceptive and tricky nature would save her and her pal's hides. [/blockquote]

One could hardly go three feet without tripping over a thick knot of roots, brambles, potholes, or all three. It was a small wonder that no one had sprained a paw or something yet, though Maestro wouldn't have been surprised. The sole consolation was the roof formed by the tangled mass of branches above head. Winter had already set in, and though the boughs were barren of leaves, there was enough to prevent snow from blanketing the forest floor. He could imagine how much more complicated their journey through would be with snow covering the many snares. His thick orange fur fluffed out against the chilly air, the fox gave a cursory glance around to make sure no one was lagging behind. His group had made good progress. Few words were minced, their individual attentions focused more on where they were stepping.
Weariness and hunger lay on him like stones, clamoring for his attention, but he ignored it, fueled by his determination to reach Hexasol and wreak vengeance on the cats waiting there. Speed was of the essence if they wanted to get there before the felines got wind of the approaching Scavengers. Surprise was a powerful element in any battle; this was no exception. Even now, he was planning possible tactics for the future battles to come. What with having his own agenda to fulfill, he had more than enough to mull over. Just then, the sound of something crashing through the undergrowth snapped him back to the present. Something big. Without him even knowing why, the furs on the back of his neck rose to stand on end, bristling with a powerful sense of foreboding. And then he saw it. Seemingly out of nowhere, the giant form of a bear suddenly appeared from between two gray-brown trunks. Maestro opened his mouth, about to spit out a warning, when the air-headed saluki sauntered right into the behemoth.
That idiot! Can't she see where's going? And then: I thought bears are supposed to be hibernating in the winter. He raised his bushy tail to signal for the others to stop, cautiously backing away a few paces. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Trixie move behind a tree. Despite his normally cool demeanor, his composure was rattled at the ease with which the bear raked one paw across the tree, showering the area with splinters. "Don't make any sudden movements," Maestro cautioned lowly. With any luck, it hadn't noticed any of the others yet, and he had no desire to provoke it anymore than necessary.
" 'Ey, you guys, I can run off and lead 'er away if you want."
"No!" he snapped. It was true she could probably outrun it, but that was without counting all the other factors. Like the obstacles posed by bushes and roots and whatnot. Stumbling over any one of those could easily be her downfall, especially since the bear could simply plow through it all with its sheer bulk. Not to mention her running away would cause it to pursue her even further--and then how would they meet up again, if she didn't get lost first? No, it would be best to stick together to keep their advantage in numbers. He would have pointed all this out out loud had there been time. If there was one thing he was sure of, it was that his companions were about as smart as the giant in front of them. "Our best bet right now would be to make as much noise as possible, see if we can just scare it off first." Theoretically, seeming more threatening should deter it from trying to attack us. "If worse comes to worse, aim for its eyes, or keep behind it." |

"Hear me bark" Read My Thoughts Lemme chew your innards
The Siberian Huskey felt her multi-colored eyes roll as her sensitive black nose as her claws scrapped the piece of bark that stuck up, hidden beneath a layer of snow. Her group had been traveling through this forest that seemed to have no end as all she could mostly hear was the constant scrapping of her own paws hitting roots or her teammates having the same annoying results. The ivory and ebony parts of her fur mixed in well together as she felt at the back of her mind, a constant flea nagging her for that constant craving of blood she so badly desired right now. But not just any blood. Feline blood. The thought of felines crying in pain as her fangs torn apart her flesh, made her mouth water as she licked her lips. Lilith glanced at the canines that surrounded her. She didn't even bother to make herself familiar with their names, as she couldn't even find much reason to make an effort to imprint their names into her brain. Only reason I'm even here is because of the fact, these mutts want that feline blood just as much as I do.
Ears pricked forward as she watched, Maestro, the group leader stop as he started barking out orders. Amusement shone in Lilith's eyes as the smaller, slender bitch of the group, ran behind a tree as a bear lumbered out of nowhere, slashing at the tree with ease. The huskey shook herself as splinters were showered over them. Eyes narrowed, she felt the fur on her back raise up as the fox said the best to do now was to fend it off. Lilith wanted to tear the bear's throat out, but she knew well enough that doing so would easily be the cause of her death if the bear got one good hit at her. As the slender female stood behind the tree, she rolled her eyes. "Yeah, good idea! Hide behind the tree because it's quite obvious that the bear isn't strong enough to rip you and the tree in half!" she snapped, the sarcasm rolling off her sharp tongue as she beared her fangs at the bear.
Lilith allowed a loud snarl to escape from her lips as she started to allow barks to be thrown at the bear. Keeping her distance she continued to make a racket, hoping the commotion would startle the bear and make it turn back. She was quite sure that bears weren't suppose to be awake in Winter, but perhaps some other stupid creature had disturbed it from it's hibernation. Now it was possible her group would have to pay with the loss of some of it's members. Though Lilith would make sure that none of the deaths would include her. She was quite too much important to die now.

"D-d-d-d-Dass-s-sher St-st-st-stu-stutt-t-t-t-ers" Dasher Contimplates Dasher Goes For A Walk
There was a hesitance in Dasher's step. Well, there always was, there always had been since he was born. Since he was born different. He wasn't like the others, and it wasn't like he could say anything. No one really talked to him because he couldn't talk back. Well, he could but it'd come out so broken that they wouldn't understand it anyway. So, he didn't talk. This entire trip, he hadn't spoken, these canines had found him, asked him to come along, assumed he was mute he could imagine. If it meant perhaps getting the anger out on some felines like the ones who had picked on him as a pup, it would be worth it. No less that he was in a group with a fox who enjoyed smearing his intelligence in everyone's face, a incredibly rough and harsh spoken Siberian Husky, an order following German Shepherd, a flirtatious Saluki and the motherly St. Bernard that he'd stuck next to the entire walk. His head was low as he walked, his paws scuffing the ground with each step. They ached a little but his floppy ears rotated as the noise snuffling in the woods drew him from his thoughts.
Standing in front of him was a massive sized angry mother grizzly with beady dark eyes and enormous claws. Its two cubs let out low grunting noises as they scaled the nearest tree out of danger and the creature began to lumber towards them, huffing loudly, roars echoing from its frothy coated maw. There was no doubt that Dasher was scared, his brow furrowed slightly as he dug his paws backward into the ground, pushing himself away as the creature let out a bellowing warning roar. It kicked branches, twigs and rocks around with each lumbering heavy step. It left thick enormous paw-prints in the wet snow and the creature loped closer.
He whined weakly and backed from the angry mother bear. She tromped towards them, tearing at trees with angry claws and he backed up a little more, moving slightly towards Cass and her large protective size. He whined a little and backed up more before he felt the vicious Husky push past him slightly, her throaty bark carrying over the trees as she attempted to scare the bear back. He parted his muzzle and froze. Even his bark would stutter, he didn't want them to laugh at a time like this, so instead, he shrunk back a bit more and tucked his short tail between his legs. He was here to fight cats, not bears.

Trix shuddered as she heard the bear heave around, each paw sending vibrations through the ground every time it tramped across the frosty earth. She looked back at Maestro, who was blatantly frazzled by her mistake and the fact they now had an angry mother bear on their hands. She reluctantly obeyed his command to not move despite how close she was to the monster, and gulped. Oh Trixie, how do you manage to get yourself in these kinds of messes. She wanted to groan. Usually I'm the one getting everyone out of these kinds of ordeals. At Lilith's words, she whipped her head around and shot a venomous glare in her direction. If looks could kill, Trixie would be a murderer by now. Well, maybe if I could move I could do something about it, stupid! She didn't dare bark back at the female...that would only be foolish considering the bear was still very close, and by the looks of it Maestro was mad enough at her as it was. But then he exclaimed 'no' to her idea and suggested they should make a lot of noise. She rolled her eyes and started to bark, jumping from side to side to rustle the leaves and make it sound like there were many more dogs than it seemed. The bear lumbered closer and Trix found herself having to move sideways so she didn't get killed or spotted at the same time. She looked back at all of the dogs, all barking ferociously but one. Dasher was backing away with his tail between his legs, and Trix felt a stab of pity for the dog. Truthfully she felt like him right now...after all, she was the idiot who ran into the bear in the first place. This just sucks, doesn't it. She didn't want to fight any bears...no, she was here for cats, and now the bear was getting on her nerves. She snarled, heightening the anger in her voice in an attempt to deter the bear even more. And then Trixie noticed the two baby bears. Oh, duh! No wonder she's so defensive! She should be hibernating right now but she's got two little ones and they all look too hungry to sleep. Trix then wondered whether or not the bear was here to defend her cubs or that she was hungry enough to kill a couple of dogs. "She thinks we're going to harm her cubs, Maestro. I don't think barking will scare her now...it's only making her angrier. Either that, or she's hungry!" Trixie barked. They would have to be incredibly frightening to scare off this bear. She was now smashing her paws across branches and charging through the underbrush, looking for a victim of her merciless prowess. Her furious roars and bellows only further demonstrated her stubbornness. Trixie attempted Maestro's second plan next and she rounded the bear cautiously, but froze in her tracks as she saw the baby cubs look in her direction. This isn't going to work! We're doomed. How badly she desired to run and lead it off....but she knew that wasn't a good idea either. She snarled in irritation. She was tired and miserable, and out of all the places the bear would pop out here where they were the most tired and defenseless. She looked back at Maestro rather helplessly, wondering if he had any other ideas for her to put into play. This was not her kind of combat so she wasn't skilled neither prepared for an attack like this. Not to mention that she was the smaller, more fragile dog of the group. Saluki's were built to run, not to fight, and her slender bones would break much easier than most other dogs' bones here. [/blockquote]

At the very least, the bear hadn't burst into a full-on charge yet, instead continuing its threatening display of roaring and raking through tree trunks, menacing slowly closer. It still wasn't good enough though. Even if they sounded more formidable, eventually it would try to attack anyway unless they moved out of range. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Dasher scooting away from the bear. The Airedale was merely staring fearfully at the creature without a sound escaping from his lips. In spite of their predicament, Maestro felt a prickle of irritation. He had a good idea what was keeping Dasher from pitching in, but it seemed stupid to choose being mauled by a bear--which was going to happen unless they did something else--because of a little stutter. Honestly, I have bigger things to deal with right now aside from his stammering. Pushing the thought aside, Maestro cast his thoughts around for some other tactic. It was becoming apparent that the bear wasn't about to back down to a show of barking.
Trixie's next comment caught his attention. Obviously she didn't have any helpful suggestions to offer as to how to tackle it, not that he expected her to. But the cubs explained its stubborn fury. "Don't be ridiculous, what animal hibernates on an empty stomach?" the fox scoffed, disdainful. None, any fool knows that. Besides, I bet this forest is usually teeming with prey and berries if we actually bothered to look. Chances were that something had awakened it from its slumber. It would certainly contribute to the bear's mood. Maestro glanced around at the others, his orange gaze shifting from Trixie to Lilith to his friend, K9, and the others. Stupid and infuriating though they often were, he was compelled to somehow get them all through it. Not that he was too concerned for them on a personal level, except for maybe K9, all of the Scavengers would be needed for once they reached Hexasol. And the chances of them escaping unscathed were very slim if they tried to engage the bear in a full on fight. None of them were in the best condition for such a battle.
"Stay away from the cubs. Luckily for us, it won't want to stray too far from them. That means we might be able to get it to give up on us once be back off far enough. Don't just run off; we don't want to provoke it into chasing us down." Maestro eyed the bear wearily, not daring to turn his back on it even as he took several careful steps backward, testing the ground for hidden dips. "We'll have to circle around the area--better that than to get killed going through straight." The rumbling growl reverberated from the grizzly as it swung its massive head around at them, dark eyes watching. Maestro let another harsh snarl rip from his throat, determined not to betray any signs of an easy kill to the mother.

"Hear me bark" Read My Thoughts Lemme chew your innards
Lilith could tell that the slim female had wanted to snap back a remark at her as she could see the irritation in her eyes. Pulling back her black lips to reveal sharp rows of teeth, accompanied with two large canines, she allowed a small growl to escape, warning the female that it was best to keep her trap shut. The husky felt a satisfied smirk dance onto her features before she quickly jumped away as the angry mother bear nearly slashed her in half, almost creating a mark on her pelt. Pinning back her ears she snapped her teeth as a bark escaped as she felt the fur on her back rise even more.
Her bi-colored eyes turned to glance at Maestro as she made sure to avoid any attacks that were directed at her. "So, how exactly do we plan on going around without having this bear chase us down?" she asked, raising an invisible brow at the fox. Lilith was curious if this canine was really as smart as everyone believed he was. Flicking her ear she noticed the one canine back away with a whimper as everyone else stood their ground. Turning her skull she narrowed her eyes as she felt her ivory fangs be bared at the skittish male. "How are you even in this group when you are scared of a bear? How do you possibly think you're going to survive against a feline? Hell, we should throw you as bait to lure them in before we attack!" she snapped, eyes hard on his figure as she noted the tail that was tucked well between his hind legs. Rolling her eyes she looked over to the St.Bernard that he hid behind, glaring at the canine before turning her attention to the front of the group. She didn't have time to deal with wimps.

[scrolly:h(270),w(255),sy]Watch my moves! Read my mind! Hear my voice!
Sure paws hit the ground, as K9's nose told him what there was to know of the area. He was far ahead of the group now, doing what he usually did. Walking this far with this many dogs only made everyone bored, and boredom led to conversation, which K9 wanted no part in. He'd much rather scout ahead and sound off an alarm if need be. He was just close enough to the group, that if cries went out he would hear them. He look a long way around a large cave, keeping a good yard's distance between himself and the entrance. It was almost out of sight, when he lost his footing on a lose rock. The rock went down, dropping his foot with it, landing his ankle in the hole of a fallen hollow log. A strange bark leaped from his throat, sounding more like a deep and gruff yelp. He thought he heard a faint echo of his noise, which he assumed must just be the sound bouncing off of the many trees in the dense forest.
He worked for a moment, and freed his leg. It wasn't long before he was plowing on again, hearing nothing form the rest of the group behind. This was a nice routine. K9 lived to follow orders, even if he didn't like when he had to give them to himself. He usually relied on his friend Maestro to supply him with a list of tasks. Maestro had the brains for the big picture, he was good with plans. K9 admired his friend, for obvious reasons. A level head was a rare thing, and should be respected, after all.
His pace slowed to a stop as his head came up and his ears turned to listen for what was behind him. He listened intently, but something was wrong. He stood still long enough that his comrades should have caught up, and he should be able to hear their footsteps, but he couldn't. He'd made a half circled just beginning to turn back, when the cry went out. It wasn't a cry, actually. It sounded like a tree being blown in half. He was in a sprint before his mind had formed the decision to move. The forest flew by in sporadic blurs of deep greens and browns. K9's eyes and ears strained for there was to see and hear, before his nose was assaulted with information. Something big, something angry, very angry, and something female. There were two more, smaller, afraid... Mother bear. Cubs.
A problem, a situation, had presented itself. So, K9's mind went into a systematic mode. He reached the point of interest quickly, but not quickly enough. Everyone was barking like they were mad, clearly trying to intimidate the bear. It wasn't working. His eyes flashed across the faces, all looking different, yet the same. Maestro was doing what he did best, giving orders. He didn't have much to work with either, they were quickly out of any good options. K9 was to the bear's left, seemingly unnoticed for now. K9 decided to keep it that way, and snuck his way behind the cave entrance. The cave was above ground, which meant K9 could go behind and climb to stand directly above the bear, which is just what he did. He was standing above the bear's head now, as she growled and lumbered around, still preoccupied with the five other canines below.
K9 could see Maestro's feet move slowly backward, testing the ground, and staring at the mother bear, likely judging the chance of the bear breaking into a run after him. K9's resolve hardened, as he looked his comrade square in the eyes and flicked his nose upward, attempting to silently tell him to run. Almost to accentuate the necessity of action, the bear took a commanding step forward. K9 didn't wait to see Maestro's sign off on his plan. He kicked off a rock the size of a baseball, landing it square in the back of the mother bear's head. Followed by a torrent of barks, growls, and terrorizing snarls, he had the bear's full attention. The mother bear's large paw came flying up from below, aiming for K9's skull. His head jerked up, but not without risk. Her black talons landed on his chest, cutting gashes right over his heart. The blow sent him half a stumble backward, but he held his ground, but not without worry. He certainly hoped the rest of the scavengers could run, quickly. He couldn't hold this perch for long. [/scrolly] | |
ooc; so sorry this is so late! But, I love how you guys have played this so far! <3 I hope it's alright that K9 is sorta trying to save the day here. I couldn't think of another way that everyone was gonna get out of this mess. xP

Trix rolled her eyes, begging Maestro silently to stop and think for a moment. "Then why else is she out here trying to kill us all?" She snarled, frustrated with the chaos taking place right now. Not only did she have a stupid bear in her way, but a few members of the small fleet had her pelt bristling, especially the cocky husky and the overpowering Maestro. Upon hearing Lilith torment the frightened Dasher, she finally spat out something. "What I would give to have you shut up!" Stupid twit, let her try me. I won't stand for this constant bickering...we need to get rid of this bear! She resumed her barking after that, hoping to drown out any pathetic retorts Lilith had to offer. Finally, Maestro started backing away, and Trixie felt annoyance tug at her fur. It was then that she spotted K9, positioned strategically above the mother bear. She couldn't help but grin...he was always reliable like that. She caught his signal swiftly but waited until he distracted the animal to dart away from the arena, hoping everyone would have the sense to run off as well. There was one problem, however- even though she had sprinted out of that place pretty fast, she did not miss the blow the bear had landed on K9. What's he going to do now?"I doubt he'll make it out of there easily...maybe we could devise some sort of distraction as well so he could scoot out of there, but our distraction would be more inconspicuous of course. If we all spread out and barked at different times, or something like that...we could at least confuse the bear." Thinking fast, Trixie whipped her head back and forth as she searched for inspiration. "There! Look at that small den...we can barely fit but the bear won't be able to...worse case scenario we could always hide in there." Trixie frowned, unable to connect any real plan together from what she had discovered. All she could do was offer up solutions and hope Maestro would approve of something she said. And maybe, if they were more fortunate, K9 would make it out of there somehow so no course of action had to be taken. What do bears like and dislike? I doubt we'll find a beehive out here in winter, and there aren't any humans to shoot this beast down. Maybe we could find a cat to distract the bear...not like it will matter if it gets killed or not. If she loses sight of one of her cubs, maybe she will forget about us. Trix sighed. All of her ideas would likely work but they would take too much to put into action. Plus, it seemed nothing she could say would please Maestro or the others. I really think I should just lead it off. It would take me only a few minutes to loose the dumb creature and then I could circle back and we'd be on our merry way. But hey, what do I know. She furrowed her eyebrows and broke her gaze from Maestro's, trying to avoid portraying any defeat in her eyes. I'm done with suggesting stuff; let the others chip in. She glanced around the crowd hopefully, wishing she could encourage Dasher in some way. If he didn't start toughening up soon he wouldn't last a second, just as Lilith had said. For Trix it felt very unfortunate that he couldn't overcome his shyness- he likely had some very helpful ideas. It didn't help that one of the best dog here, K9, was trapped.
