He was born long after the virus came the world; when he discovered that creatures called humans were responsible for making the buildings of the city Gusto decided to try and find out more about the ones who once had control of the earth. From what he had learned from some of his pack mates that once lived with humans before the virus, some were pleasant to be around while others probably deserved to die. He had chosen to explore this building, the place where the adult humans would send their children to be looked after by others.
He explored the outside first, which looked somewhat interesting. He couldn't figure out what the different areas around the building were for. The deflating basket ball and dirty tennis rackets he that he found, he figured, were connected to the particular area the were in. Of course, he just had no idea how.
He looked around as he slowly made his way the front entrance of the building. He paused at the front doors and, tentatively sniffed at the inside. He could mostly smell dust, as well as many fading scents of cats and dogs that were he before him. He cautiously stepped inside, leaving paw prints in the thick layer of dust that coated the ground as he slowly made his way down the hall.
He turned to his right, the first open door he came across. There were two large desks here, and abandoned papers laying everywhere. Other than the desks the room was practically empty which made him lose interest. He stepped out of the room and paused in the hallway, looking around for somewhere else to explore.

[atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=border,0,true] | [atrb=background,http://i963.photobucket.com/albums/ae113/gimble2355/twinsmiddle.jpg][scrolly:h(330),w(218),sy] The morning was cool and fresh, far from the searing heat which had plagued the city in the past month or so. The skies were grey, not threatening any rain, simply cloudy, blocking out most of the sunlight. A steady wind blew, light and frisky, across the asphalt, bending the grass on either side and delicately rustling the leaves in the trees. In a large, clear area, stood an immense building. It was made of hard concrete, but after years of abandon, there were cracks running along the sides. Most of the windows were broken, dirty with neglect but otherwise, the edifice was intact. The place was one of the few buildings the twins hadn't explored right down to the foundations. They knew this city practically by heart, even in the pack and pride territories, thanks to the sewers in which they travelled. But this. . . they had only gotten round to discovering it recently. And so, with much caution, the twins approached the great building, taking in the different areas that composed the outside. They didn't really know what their use was, but it must have had some significance when the humans were still around. The things they had constructed. . . Aries was astonished.
Jumping with ease onto a windowsill, Cepheus peered into the room beyond. It was dark, but he could see rows and rows of desks, aligned in straight, neat lines. At the front was a larger, more ornate desk, surrounded by myriads of papers which had been blown off by the wind that rattled the remnants of the windows. Her slipped inside, lithe and silent, followed by his brother. Opening his mouth, Aries scented the air and froze. A strong scent of coyote lingered in the air, very recent. Sensing his brother's alarm, Cepheus pricked his ears. Pawsteps could be heard just outside the room. Both males looked at each other. What was most worrying was that the coyote carried the scent of the Tempest Pack. If he knew they were here, the canine would probably rip them to shreds. The males looked around for an escape route, or a hiding place they could use to escape the dog coming towards them. Aries noticed an aeration tunnel, hanging from the ceiling. The grate that usually stopped anything from going into it had fallen to the ground. This was their chance. Flicking his tail at his brother's shoulder to catch his attention, he leapt silently onto a table along the wall, then onto a tall filing cabinet. It was a long jump, but they could make it.
Aries jumped, landing in the tunnel, scrambling out the way as his twin followed him, right in the nick of time. They peered down as the coyote came into the room and quickly got bored. He was only a young coyote though, and the males relaxed slightly. But they couldn't underestimate the young canine, because he looked strong and healthy. If he got a hold of either of them. . . Luckily, they were high enough for the coyote to be unable to reach them, whatever he did. Aries sat down, relief flooding him. But Cepheus had another idea. A mischievous glint appeared in his eye. Aries frowned, it was a bad idea to play tricks on Tempest members. But Cepheus gave a pleading stare. Rolling his eyes, Aries gave in, then lifted his eyebrows in a questioning stare. Watch, said Ceph's expression as he walked into the tunnel, his pawsteps silent. The aeration tunnel passed in the hallway, but there was no opening to see. They could only hear the coyote's steps stop in the hallway. Cepheus smiled to his brother, then let out his deepest, most evil laugh. The aeration tunnel was perfect. It amplified, and carried the sound into all the nearby classes, as if the laugh came from all those different directions at once. It was almost impossible to determine the source of the sound, because it echoed around the hallways, was carried into the classrooms, bounced around the rooms. It was so effective, the sound seemed to come from the walls themselves. It was sinister enough to scare any creature.
The younger sibling went silent, listening intently to what the coyote would do. Would this work?

He continued to stand in the hallway as he looked around him. The hall was almost empty too, except for a few dusty chairs, pictures and posters that were either falling or had already fallen off of the walls, where paint was peeling in various places. Younger humans used to always come here when they were still around. Even though he hadn't explored the whole building yet he couldn't figure out why they would come to a boring looking place.
He started to move again, absentmindedly sniffing at the chairs and pictures as he passed by. He soon approached another open door that led to another room, this one was much larger than the first though. This room also had chairs and tables, but there was also several shelves in the center of the larger room. Once Gus was satisfied with exploring the room he started to walk out. He walked more slowly though, because he thought he could hear the faint sound of paws, where they were coming from he couldn't tell. Gus didn't worry about though, thinking it was probably just mice.
Gusto had only walked two steps away from the door when he heard the evil sounding laugh echoing through the halls. He froze on the spot, hairs standing on end and tail sticking up behind him as he looked around for the source of the sound. There was no one around but him. No one told him this place was probably haunted.
"Hello?" He barked as he turned around in a full circle. He released his most threatening growl as yelled again. "Who's there? Come out now and face me."

Tingles of joy and excitement ran down the twin's backs, listening as the canine became still, startled by the sinister-sounding laugh. Both twins smiled to each other, laughing in silence. Oh, this was good. Even Aries, who had been reluctant to play the prank, was now plenty excited. The canine had moved along the hall just before Cepheus had laughed, and there was a handy grate from which they could watch his reaction. Peering through the slits, the two toms watched as the coyote's fur stood on end, tail raised behind him, turning to see who had done the sound. Hello? Who's there? Come out now and face me. He growled, threatening, but the two toms were well out of his reach. They simply smiled as they looked proudly at their handiwork. Cepheus decided they would play a little more with this young coyote. ”HOW DARE YOU COME INTO MY HOUSE!” boomed Cepheus in his deepest, most sinister voice. His brother gave a background whispering sound to complete the effect, and once more, the message resonated through this part of the school, making the words swell like a wave of sound, powerful, and most of all, coming from all different directions.
Aries took over, imitating the tone his brother used to perfection, his voice indistinguishable. ”WHO ARE YOU, STRANGER, TO SET FOOT IN MY HOME?” |
His twin added the whispering sound effect of ghosts, adding to the sinister atmosphere. They stayed absolutely still, waiting to see what the canine's reaction would be. Oh they would have a good story to tell. A few seconds passed. The twins, peering through the slits of the grate, didn't notice that it was on the verge of falling. Intent on the reaction of the dog, Cepheus pressed in closer to the metal grid. The metal detached itself from the aeration shaft, falling to the ground. It landed with a very loud clang, lifting a cloud of dust as it did. ”Oh well, there goes our cover,” said Cepheus, his voice being carried in the same way, but at a smaller scale, peering down at the grate before looking at the coyote, a large smile on his face. The twins looked at each other, and promptly burst out laughing. Oh, this had been fun! He continued to stand in the hall as he looked left and right for the source of the voice. His brave facade had quickly faded and was replaced with a panicked expression.
”HOW DARE YOU COME INTO MY HOUSE!”
This confused him a little, but he didn't think that mentioning it to a, seemingly, angry disembodied voice was a good idea. He had been told that human children used to come here almost all the time for a few hours each day of the year, no one told him that they actually lived here. Where there actually ghosts haunting this place?
”WHO ARE YOU, STRANGER, TO SET FOOT IN MY HOME?”
He didn't say another word as he took one step forward to leave, but paused again when he heard a different sound. He didn't know exactly what the new sound was, but he quickly noted that it was coming from above him. Gus looked up but jumped back a second later before the grid could hit him.
He sneezed when the cloud of dust quickly invaded his nostrils and looked ahead of him when he noticed that something else had fallen along with the metal grid.
”Oh well, there goes our cover,”
His eyes widened when he heard the voice again, but this time it wasn't threatening him, and the smoke cleared to reveal two twin cats. Gus had a surprised expression while the cats, whom he noted as loners, looked amused that they had tricked him.
"What are you laughing at?" He said with a growl but anyone could tell he was embarrassed. He turned away from them as he tried to regain his composure. "You're lucky you're loners, otherwise you'd be dead by now." He then walked around the two felines and went to explore more of the building.

[atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=border,0,true] | [atrb=background,http://i963.photobucket.com/albums/ae113/gimble2355/twinsmiddle.jpg][scrolly:h(330),w(218),sy] As the twin's trick began taking it's effect, the coyote's face lost it's air of bravery and delved more into fear and panic. The two cats smiled at each other, enjoying the trick very much, taking pleasure in seeing the young canine unsure and afraid. That was the part they loved the most about their jokes; seeing the effect their tricks had on the creatures they were laid upon. This one was quite resilient to not have bolted out of the door as soon as their angry voices were heard. After all, some ghosts were noted for being especially violent, and angering a spirit wasn't exactly a smart thing to do.
An air of confusion came upon the coyote's face, as if wondering what the disembodied voice was talking about. The confusion seemed to be around the idea of home. Aries frowned, biting his lip. It's true that this building didn't actually look like the homes the humans had constructed for themselves. Their houses were usually smaller, with less passageways and more large rooms, and had definitely a more open feeling to them. Besides, none of the furniture in this building was usually found in those houses. Was it then possible that they were getting it wrong and that this building didn't actually serve as a house? In any case, they had no choice but to continue with that line of speech.
The coyote said nothing, taking a few steps forward. He looked up just in time to see the grate and leap out of the way. Cepheus, who had been leaning on the grid, toppled over the side in the same time. Aries watched in horror as his twin fell, jumping immediately after him in a moment of panic. Cepheus, twisting his tail, landed on his feet, springing instantly onto the top of the lockers lined next to the walls. His brother, landing next to him on his paws as well, imitated his twin and pounced onto the lockers before the dust had even cleared. The coyote sneezed, dust in his nose. His expression took on an air of surprise as he looked at them.
What are you laughing at? The twin's chuckles subsided, and Aries gave the young coyote a penetrating stare, a smile pulling his left lip. He would have thought that the answer to that question was quite obvious. ”Well what do you think?” said he, his voice mocking, his eyebrows rising. The canine's embarrassment was obvious even to Cepheus, who wasn't as perceptive as his brother. You're lucky you're loners, otherwise you'd be dead by now. Aries rolled his eyes whilst his brother gave a snort. ”My, my, we should thank the lord!” |
said Aries, his tone dripping with sarcasm. ”So, what's your name? Just so that we can put it on that panicked face of yours when we tell our future kids about this,” asked Cepheus, his tone mocking as he addressed the coyote. They were probably pushing it, addressing a Tempest member in such a way, but he was young and they had tricked him. The embarrassment he felt would probably stop him from telling anyone else. The canine walked past them, going down the hallway. No eager to let their prey go, the two cats started to follow him down the hallway, keeping to the tops of the lockers. ”You seemed a little confused back there when Ceph's ghost impersonation said that this place was his home. Why is that?” asked Aries, curious to see what the young coyote knew of this place. He ignored the two felines as best as he could as he walked down the almost empty halls. The next room he choose to explore was, to him, about medium sized. "Gusto. Tell whoever you want, I don't care." He said, not even looking at the cats who had decided to follow and taunt the young coyote. Yes, he was still embarrassed from earlier but, so what if they told anyone else? There's no way his pack would believe what some cat said, right? He stepped through yet another wide open door and looked around.
This room was just as boring as the first few rooms had had seen. This room had two more of the fairly large desks with old papers strewn every were. This room only had those desks and two chairs. Gus started to question why he wanted to explore this building in the first place, at that moment he felt like dropping down on the floor and falling asleep, or just leave. But then he would probably still have to deal with his two 'new friends'. Unless they would follow him back to Tempest territory.
”You seemed a little confused back there when Ceph's ghost impersonation said that this place was his home. Why is that?”
"Well, look at this place." He spoke again, still not looking at the cats as he walked out of the room and down the hall again to another room. "None of these rooms look interesting nor comfortable to rest in." He walked into what used to be the nurse's office. "And I was told that young humans used to come here all the time, I don't know why, but this was never called a home." He could see, of course, another one of the large desks on one side of the room. On the other side he could see curtain hanging from metal poles that separated two beds.

Both cats jumped back onto the floor of the building, padding silently after the canine. Gusto. Tell whoever you want, I don't care. Cepheus gave a sigh of disappointment. This canine didn't let things get to him all that easily. Which was something most creatures struggled with. It also meant that there was no fun in teasing this Gusto about it. The mocking smile disappeared from Cepheus' lips, making place for a more friendly expression. He knew that teasing the canine again would be just plain mean. Playfulness had it's limit. Besides, both cats didn't want to make themselves an enemy of the Tempest pack. For both their sakes, that was something they tried to avoid. They had been very vulnerable when they had fallen from the ceiling, and this coyote could have taken their lives very easily. They would have to be more careful from now on. Cepheus gave an awkward look to Aries. He didn't like to be too mean to people who didn't deserve it. â€Um, listen. Just forget our teasing earlier. It was a little mean, and really, just a little fun. So, er, sorry,†he said, his tone slightly awkward.
Gusto had chosen another room to explore. This time, it was a medium-sized room, smaller than the ones they had just visited, without the rows and rows of desks all over the place. There were few things in this one; two desks and chairs to go with them. Like all the previous rooms, the paper that had survived the years of neglect were strewn all over the place, dislodged by wind that filtered through the broken windows. How strange.
The coyote didn't look at either of them as he answered Ari's question. Well, look at this place. None of these rooms look interesting or comfortable to rest in. And I was told that young humans used to come here all the time, I don't know why, but this was never called a home. Aries pondered his answer looking around at the new room they were in. Indeed, despite the two moth-eaten beds separated by a sheet, the room had no indication of being a resting place. By the rows and rows of desks in the previous rooms, he could conclude that many humans came here. Then why two beds? Those must be for special occasions, when lying down was necessary. Maybe when one of them was sick? Yes, that made sense. â€Mmm. Why all the desks though? What reason would push so many young humans to congregate in this building? In the previous rooms, there were rows of desks, with one bigger desk in front. That suggests authority, a human of more importance. . .†|
started Aries, his gaze thoughtful. â€. . .maybe an older human? Like a parent, or a mentor, to keep the youngsters in line? Oh, I know! Maybe it was where humans learnt stuff? Like how to build these buildings and such.†Cepheus said, his paw gesturing outside the window, where the city could be seen. Such incredible things these humans had done! But their strange habit of making things had destroyed much of the forest around the town. The twins looked back to Gusto, wondering if he knew anything more on the humans. Once again he stepped through the door and walked inside the room to explore. He walked toward the beds first and examined them. The frame holding one of the beds looked worn and rotted; like it was ready to give out at any moment while the other looked okay enough to stand or sleep on. The sheets on the beds still looked like someone had recently slept and left, event though no one had probably used these beds for a long time.
He then walked toward the desk while listening to what the two felines had to say.
"Mmm. Why all the desks though? What reason would push so many young humans to congregate in this building? In the previous rooms, there were rows of desks, with one bigger desk in front. That suggests authority, a human of more importance. . ."
That kind of made sense to him. The large desks he would see at the front of the other rooms kind of reminded him of pack leaders that would stand at the front of packs at pack gatherings to speak. Maybe this was the same thing only, whoever was at the front would teach other humans something instead of announce something.
". . .maybe an older human? Like a parent, or a mentor, to keep the youngsters in line? Oh, I know! Maybe it was where humans learnt stuff? Like how to build these buildings and such."
"That makes sense." Gus said and jumped up on the chair behind the desk and looked at the buildings outside. "I was born after the humans all died. The only reason zi don't think they're a myth is because, I don't believe a cat or dog could make anything like that." He said, gesturing to the buildings outside and looked around the room again. "This room isn't like the others though. Maybe some would rest here?" A yawn escaped from his muzzle before he continued speaking. "This place is pretty boring, in my opinion."
(Sorry I took so long to reply)

[atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=border,0,true] | [atrb=background,http://i963.photobucket.com/albums/ae113/gimble2355/twinsmiddle.jpg][scrolly:h(330),w(218),sy] Aries looked around the room once more, observing the obvious and striking differences this room had compared to the ones they had visited earlier. Whilst the others where filled with desks and books and had a rather austere, formal air to them, this room lacked the desks and the books. Obviously this room had a different purpose to it. Learning wasn't the goal. Aries sat on the cold concrete floor, curling his tail around him thoughtfully. His twin, unable to sit still, pounced gracefully onto the desk, examining the piles of paper left on it. The humidity had severely affected the thin sheets, and much of what had originally been on them had altogether disappeared. Next to one of the piles of paper sat a strange object which was rather different from all others in the room. Made of metal, a part of it had what seemed to be a screen, raised so that a human sitting at the desk could see it. The other part was flat to the table, rows and rows of keys with different symbols on them making it's top part.
Gusto pounced onto the chair, looking outside at the buildings. That makes sense. I was born after all the humans had died. The only reason I don't think they're a myth is because, I don't believe a cat or dog could make anything like that. Aries nodded. It was anatomically impossible for canines or felines to have built such great buildings, and so many of them. “Neither canines nor felines have the necessary grasping capacity to create such great buildings. These humans must have had special adaptations to be able to handle the bricks they made their homes out of. Besides, Cepheus and I have seen the more elaborate homes in the northern area of Hexasol. The cloth these humans made is so delicately woven that nothing any cat or dog could possibly make could rival.” said Aries, his tone laced with admiration. These humans did make incredible structures. “Sometimes I wish I could have seen what these humans looked like,” |
said Cepheus with a sigh. This room isn't like the others though. Maybe some would rest here? The twin cats looked around the room. The beds certainly suggested that some slept here. “Certainly would explain the beds,” said Aries. Cepheus, still on the desk, approached the metal contraption on the desk and pressed some of the keys. This place is pretty boring, in my opinion. With a whirr, the contraption came to life, the screen lighting up brightly. With a yowl, the young cat pounced backwards in surprise, his fur on end. Aries pounced onto the desk where his brother was, watching the machine with awe. “I wouldn't be so sure if I were you. I think the humans had a few tricks up their sleeves,” said the older sibling. The two cats approached the brightly lit screen with caution. What in the world could that be? ------------------------------- words; 501 muse; 8/10 tags; Mika with Gusto! <3 notes; The metal contraption thing is a laptop computer, in case you're wondering xD Oh and sorry for the incredibly long wait Dx [/scrolly]
